Honda appears to be preparing a major redesign of the CR-V, with a camouflaged prototype of the next-generation SUV spotted testing on public roads.
The images, shared by Instagram user kindelauto, offer an early look at what could become the seventh-generation CR-V. While much of the vehicle remains concealed beneath heavy camouflage, its overall proportions suggest that Honda could be taking the popular SUV in a more substantial direction. The prototype appears to retain the CR-V’s familiar upright SUV proportions, but there are signs of a more imposing body and a potentially more squared-off design. The heavy disguise makes it difficult to determine the final styling, particularly around the front and rear, but the vehicle’s overall shape indicates that Honda is not simply preparing another minor facelift.
That would mark a significant change for a nameplate that has steadily grown with every generation. The current sixth-generation CR-V debuted internationally for the 2023 model year and brought a larger body, a more premium cabin and an increasingly electrified powertrain lineup.

A full redesign around 2028 would put the next CR-V on roughly the expected product cycle for the current model. It also arrives at an interesting time for the global SUV market, with rivals increasingly turning to hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology as an alternative to both conventional petrol engines and fully electric vehicles.
Honda has yet to confirm the next CR-V’s powertrain lineup, so it is too early to say whether the new model will become predominantly hybrid-powered or retain conventional petrol options. The company has, however, been expanding its hybrid strategy across key markets, making some form of electrification likely to remain central to the CR-V’s future.
There is also the possibility of further growth. The CR-V has gradually moved up in size and positioning over the years, and Honda could use the next generation to give the SUV additional interior space while creating greater separation from smaller models in its lineup.
For now, the prototype spotted in the latest images provides more questions than answers. Honda has yet to reveal when the new CR-V will make its official debut, but a 2028 model-year arrival would make sense based on the current generation’s timeline.
If these early prototypes are any indication, the next CR-V could be more than a routine model change. Honda appears to be preparing a considerably more substantial evolution of one of its most important global SUVs.

Autocar’s Take
The Honda CR-V has gradually evolved from a practical compact SUV into one of Honda’s most important global models, so a major redesign makes sense. What interests me most isn’t simply whether the 2028 Honda CR-V will look bigger or tougher, but how Honda will approach electrification. The current Philippine CR-V already offers an e variant, so the next generation has a solid foundation to build on.
These spy shots are still only an early clue, but they suggest Honda isn’t content with simply refreshing the current formula. The next CR-V could be a considerably more significant step forward.
