When it comes to today’s minivan landscape, competition is tighter than ever, with models like the BYD eMAX 9 and Hyundai Staria fighting for attention. Still, one model stands above the rest: the Toyota Alphard. And soon, it’s due for another round of updates – at least in its home market in Japan.
According to the news outlet Kuruma, Toyota is reportedly preparing a series of revisions for the Alphard, ranging from minor updates, such as body color options and enhanced security features, to more significant changes, including a restructuring of the trim lineup.
On the styling front, the Alphard’s black exterior option is expected to receive subtle refinements. Security is also being addressed, with improvements to the smart key system aimed at enhancing accuracy and reducing the risk of relay attacks.
The biggest change, however, involves the model range. Currently offered in base X, mid-spec Z, and range-topping Executive Lounge trims in Japan, the Alphard is reportedly set to drop the entry-level X variant in favor of a new G trim. Rather than weak demand, the move is said to reflect rising costs, with the G positioned as a better match for updated pricing and feature expectations.
As for timing, a Tokyo-based dealership suggests a June debut for the updated model, with pre-orders potentially opening within the month. However, buyers may face long waits, as demand for the Alphard remains high and existing orders continue to fill production slots.
For now, these updates appear limited to Japan, with no confirmation yet for international markets, including the Philippines.
The Alphard’s twin, sold in other markets as the Vellfire, is set to receive some minor improvements of its own, with representatives saying that although the Vellfire might be easier to get your hands on than the Alphard, demand remains high for both models.
Autocar’s Take
With the luxury minivan market saturated by numerous models, from the Denza D9, GAC M8, Kia Carnival, and even electrified contenders, the Toyota Alphard continues to hold its ground. With its combination of a highly refined cabin in top-of-the-line models and Toyota’s well-known reputation for bulletproof reliability, these latest updates reflect the brand’s commitment to its “Kaizen” philosophy of continuous incremental improvement. Should this refreshed version make its way to local Philippine shores, there’s little reason to expect anything less than continued success.
