As electrified vehicles gain traction in the Philippines, buyers today are looking beyond traditional SUVs towards larger, tech-heavy people-movers. Among these, two BYD-branded multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) have captured attention: the BYD eMax 9 DM-i and the Denza D9 DM-i. Both are 7-seat plug-in hybrid MPVs built on BYD’s electrification expertise, but their retail prices tell a very different story.
The BYD eMax 9 starts at P2,678,000 (Advanced trim) and goes up to P2,998,000 (Premium trim). The Denza D9, on the other hand, carries a P4,298,000 price tag. Though the latter is currently offered with an introductory price of P3,998,000 for early buyers, it sits about P1-million above the former.

Different price philosophies for different buyers
The BYD eMax 9 is positioned as a high-value, family-oriented MPV. Its Super DM-i plug-in hybrid electric system combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor to deliver good electric range for everyday city driving. This enables the eMax 9 to deliver a total range of nearly 1,000 km when the engine and battery are combined. For under P3-million, buyers get to enjoy a practical yet well-appointed interior with features such as powered second-row captain’s chairs, a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control, and a large infotainment display. The eMax 9 Premium even offers more ventilation and massage functions, making it feel surprising;y refined for its price point.
The Denza D9, however, sets out to do more than check boxes on convenience and efficiency. As the flagship offering from BYD’s premium market sub-brand, Denza, the D9 pairs a more powerful version of the eMax 9’s hybrid system by incorporating two electric motors and all-wheel-drive, resulting in stronger acceleration and greater composure under load. This setup inherently adds complexity and cost compared with the single electric motor and front-wheel-drive configuration of the eMax 9.
The cabin is where the price gap shows
Denza has crafted the D9’s cabin to evoke a more luxurious, executive-level experience. The second-row “zero-gravity” seats feature extensive power adjustments, heating, ventilation, and massage modes – goodies that are significantly more advanced than what is standard on the eMax 9. Premium materials such as Nappa leather, ambient mood lighting, rear entertainment screens, and a high-end 14-speaker audio system all contribute to an environment akin to a luxury lounge than a family van.
Ride comfort and refinement further distinguishes the Denza D9. Suspension tuning, noise insulation, and cabin isolation are calibrated for improved serenity and smoothness. In other words, the D9 aims to cocoon passengers in a world of luxury, not just transport them from Point A to B.

Brand positioning also plays a role
Denza is marketed as a separate, more exclusive division relative to BYD’s mainstream lineup. That strategic branding, including distinct dealer experiences, premium after-sales support, and curated customer interactions, carries a cost that is reflected on the sticker price.
Is the P1-million price difference wirth it?
For many buyers, the answer depends on priorities. The BYD eMax 9 delivers notable electrified efficiency, a practical yet feature-rich cabin, and strong value for money. Meanwhile, the Denza D9 justifies its higher price stage with added performance, all-wheel drive, superior materials, and a notably more luxurious passenger experience that takes it into up-market territory. In the end, the price tag underscores not a shortcoming in either vehicle, but a different ambition – one prioritizing value and practicality, the other aiming for refinement and premium presence.
