Nissan will be busy in the coming years, as it announced several new model launches, including the new X-Trail and the all-new Juke electric vehicle (EV). Joining the list of new Nissan models is the Xterra, which will return to the United States (U.S.) market after being discontinued in 2015.
Like the all-new Juke EV, the upcoming Nissan Xterra is part of the Japanese automaker’s revamped product strategy, which will involve narrowing the number of Nissan models from 56 to 45. Nissan plans to do this by discontinuing low-profit models and strengthening investment in growth areas. As such, it has divided its model categorization into the following:
– Heartbeat Model: A model that embodies the essence of Nissan, representing the brand’s emotional value and innovative spirit.
– Core Model: A model that supports the business through global scale and stability.
– Growth model: A model that drives the expansion of new demand.
– Partner Model: A model that expands market coverage through disciplined collaboration
According to Nissan, the Xterra is making a comeback as a Heartbeat model for the U.S. market, and the automaker aims to offer the same off-road capability it is known for. The Japanese automaker shared that the all-new Xterra will be produced in the U.S., which is seen to further strengthen Nissan’s product portfolio for North American customers.

Nissan shared a teaser image and video for the upcoming Xterra, which is scheduled to debut in late 2028. From the looks of it, the teaser suggests that the Xterra will have a prominently sculpted hood and tri-bar light clusters that resemble the design seen in the Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV. The said light clusters are also similar to the design that’s integrated into the locally available Mitsubishi Motero Sport. The teaser also hints that the Xterra could feature a large bumper, creating an assertive, bold exterior.
Nissan added that the upcoming Xterra will feature a new body-on-frame platform, with potential expansion to pickups and multi-row SUVs across Nissan and Infiniti brands. The Japanese automaker also shared that the all-new Nissan Xterra will feature a V6 hybrid powertrain.
Autocar’s Take
Nissan will indeed be busy in the coming years, as it confirms several model launches, including the all-new Xtrail, the Juke EV, and the Xterra’s official comeback. Aside from new model launches, among the key takeaways from Nissan’s revamped strategy is its dedication to introducing vehicles with an electric powertrain, both all-electric and hybrid. This approach, it gives its potential clients more options to choose from when shopping for a brand-new car.
Moreover, the Xterra signals the launch of Nissan’s new body-on-frame platform, with the possibility of being integrated into other future Nissan pickups and three-row SUVs. The Xterra is targeted for a late 2028 debut.
