MG Philippines could be expanding its model lineup yet again, and it seems that it is preparing the launch of its second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) soon, following the introduction of the MG G50 PHEV. This is after a new MG vehicle appeared on the Department of Energy’s (DOE) list of recognized EVs.
The vehicle in question is the MG RX9, a PHEV SUV that is set to go up against the likes of the BYD Tang DM-i. Based on the initial specs uploaded on the DOE website, the MG RX9 is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged hybrid engine, an electric motor, and a 24.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.
As such, the MG RX9 generates a combined power output of 324 horsepower and 390 Nm of torque. It is mated to a dedicated hybrid transmission, and power is sent to the front wheels. The initial specs also indicate it can deliver up to 100 kilometers of pure-electric driving.
In terms of its exterior, the MG RX9 has an aggressive styling that’s highlighted by a striking front end. The LED headlights and daytime running lights look sharp, while the large front bumper adds assertiveness to the vehicle’s fascia. It also has an angular bumper, completing the aggressive and composed front end.
The side is characterized by crisp lines seen on the fenders, fender flares, and doors. It also has flush door handles, adding a modern finish. The side mirrors are said to be power-folding, power-adjust, and integrated with turn signals, which is the usual design in modern vehicles.

The rear is equally sharp as the front and the side profile. It has distinctive LED taillights that span the full width of the vehicle’s rear, and it also comes with a large bumper featuring an angular design, as well as a power tailgate.
Inside, the initial specs show that the MG RX9 comes with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. From these specs, you can say that the MG RX9 comes with a modern-looking interior. Other interior features are as follows: push start button, leather-wrapped tilt & telescopic steering wheel, electronic parking brake, leather seats with ventilation and massage feature for the driver and front passenger, 12-speaker Bose sound system, among others.
The MG RX9 has a 2+2+2 seat configuration, making it a six-seater PHEV SUV based on the initial specs upload at the DOE website. The second row has captain seats, while the third row comes with a 50:50 split.

It also has MG Pilot, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and blind spot detection, among many others.
MG Philippines has yet to confirm when or if it will introduce the MG RX9 PHEV in the local market. But the car brand has already announced that it will be participating in the Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS), happening in June. As such, MG PH could use the PIMS as the launch venue for the RX9 PHEV.

Autocar’s Take
MG Philippines is committed to expanding its model lineup further, with the possibility of having a second PHEV offering through the MG RX9. The MG RX9 is a PHEV that could rival the likes of the BYD Tang DM-i, giving MG another arsenal to compete head-to-head with BYD, a car brand that has emerged as one of the popular brands in the local market, as it registered notable sales performance in 2025.
MG PH has yet to confirm when or if they will indeed introduce the RX9. But, there’s also a high possibility that it would, since it is already listed on the DOE website. Could MG PH launch the RX9 at the upcoming PIMS? Let’s wait and see.
