The Pajero is probably the most important Mitsubishi right now. Also called the Montero or Shogun, depending on the market, the flagship SUV bowed out in 2021, quietly ending a chapter for one of the brand’s icons. Since then, Mitsubishi has been caught testing a new big SUV, but the automaker has kept the details close to the chest.
That changed when Mitsubishi dropped a corporate video on New Year’s Day. Toward the end of the Ralliart-themed presentation, a big SUV was shown in silhouette. It’s a quick appearance, but it was deliberate. Mitsubishi’s long-awaited flagship is finally starting to take shape. The company’s not calling it a Pajero yet, but the teaser makes it clear: this isn’t just another crossover.
Look closer at the footage (plus a little image enhancement), and you’ll spot a camouflaged SUV with upright lines, a tall hood, and a boxy cabin. The lighting signature? Vertical LED daytime running lights with a horizontal strip – right in line with Mitsubishi’s latest design cues.
At first glance, the front-end is quite similar to the recently launched Mitsubishi Destinator and Xforce. The grille shape and LED layout are similar, but the resemblance stops there. The SUV in the teaser appears taller, longer, and more squared-off, especially at the back, plus there are visible side steps and a higher ride height.
All those details hint at real off-road capability, supported by previous spy shots from Europe and Asia, which showed a stance that matches a ladder-frame chassis. That lines up with reports that the new flagship will be truck-based, not a unibody like the Destinator.

Reports from Japan indicate that Mitsubishi is targeting a late-2026 debut, with production set to begin in Thailand before exports begin. The platform is expected to be closely related to the Mitsubishi Triton and Mitsubishi Montro Sport, likely featuring rear-wheel-drive-based four-wheel drive and a live rear axle.
Mitsubishi hasn’t confirmed engines yet, but expect diesel turbos in most markets – including the Philippines – and hybrids are reportedly on the table. The company says more details will be released over the next six months. With Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 coming up, don’t be surprised if we get an early look soon.
