The Xpeng X9 has earned a five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), achieving high marks in both Crash Protection and Post-Crash Safety.
The Euro NCAP features four categories: Crash Protection, Post-Crash Safety, Crash Avoidance, and Safe Driving. The Xpeng X9 scored 91 percent in both the Crash Protection and Post-Crash Safety categories.
The Xpeng X9 returned notable numbers for the Crash Protection category, as it scored 95 percent for frontal impact, 99 percent for side impact, and 98 percent for rear impact protection. Those numbers show that the Xpeng X9 can give you good protection in the event of a crash.
The Euro NCAP said that the X9 has a centre airbag to protect against occupant-to-occupant injuries in a side impact. The airbag performed well in Euro NCAP’s test, with good protection of the front seat occupants’ heads.
Aside from the airbag, Xpeng shared that the X9’s body structure is complemented by an 83 percent high-strength steel and aluminum construction, designed to balance impact resistance with weight efficiency. Its reinforced passenger safety cage also helps resist deformation and reduce cabin intrusion during severe impacts.
The Xpeng X9 also scored 91 percent for Post-Crash Safety. The Euro NCAP highlighted features that facilitate safer and faster rescue operations, including automatic high-voltage system deactivation, door unlocking, and hazard light activation.
For the Crash Avoidance category, the Xpeng X9 scored 82 percent. The Euro NCAP shared that the X9 is equipped with all of the latest crash avoidance technologies, and scores well for most of them. However, the sensitivity of the avoidance systems is not linked to the level of driver awareness, increasing the possibility of intervening unnecessarily.
While the Xpeng X9 secures Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star rating, it only scored 57 percent under the Safe Driving category. The Euro NCAP explained that the X9’s driver monitoring system identifies driver fatigue and various types of distraction, but not phone use, which could lead to a potential crash.
It also noted that the Xpeng X9 relies too heavily on its screen for some driving controls, and its speed assistance system does not meet the prerequisites for scoring. The speed assistance system did not meet Euro NCAP’s threshold for correct identification of the speed limit, which explains the X9’s 57 percent rating for the Safe Driving category.
