The legendary TE37 from Japanese aftermarket wheels manufacturer Rays has reached a major milestone. First introduced in 1996 under the Vulk Racing banner, the stylish JDM (Japanese domestic market) culture defining wheel is now three decades strong this year, cementing its status as one of the most recognizable performance wheels ever produced.
Originally developed as a lightweight, high-stength forged monoblock wheel for motorsport, the TE37 quickly gained traction among professional racing teams and grassroots enthusiasts alike. According to Rays, the letters T and E on the TE37 stands for “Touring Evolution,” while the number 37 is derived from its 37 kg weight for certain sizes, highlighting its engineering-first philosophy. Its distinctive 6-spoke design, engineered using Rays’ own forging technology, focused on rigidity, weight reduction, and durability.
Over three decades, the TE37 has evolved alongside the performance car market. It has appeared in time attack machines to Super GT challengers, to tuned street cars worldwide. Continuous development led to a host of variants including the TE37 Saga S-Plus for modern high-performance sports and tuner cars, the TE37 Sonic for compact performance cars, and the TE37 ultra series for vehicles requiring larger wheel sets and maximum brake clearance.

To mark the 30th anniversary, Rays has launched commemorative editions of the TE37 featuring exclusive engravings, limited-run finishes, and detailing that pay tribute to the original 1996 model. The company has also released dedicated merchandise and anniversary branding as part of the celebration campaign.
What makes the TE37 endure is not merely nostalgia. Its forged engineering, motorsport credentials, and continuous refinement have allowed it to remain technically relevant amidst increasing vehicle weights and performance outputs. In an era where wheel designs change rapidly with trends, the TE37’s silhouette has remained largely unchanged, an uncommon achievement in the aftermarket industry.
As Rays celebrate the TE37’s 30th anniversary, its continued production signals that its relevance is not confined to the past. It is still a huge part of the modern performance landscape.
Autocar’s Take
Reaching 30 years in the aftermarket world is no easy feat. The TE37’s longevity speaks volumes about its time-tested engineering. While wheel designs often come and go, this one endured because it delivered measurable performance benefits – lightness, strength, and reliability under load. That formula still matters today.
In a market increasingly driven by aesthetics, the TE37 keeps its evolution grounded in motorsport credibility. Similar to mankind’s other inventions like the paperclip or hammer, the TE37’s design has barely ever changed because it never needed to. Three decades later, it continues to prove that true icons are built on engineering integrity, not marketing cycles.
