Shell Pilipinas is celebrating its 110th anniversary by bringing together seven university teams from the Philippines for the Shell Eco-marathon 2024 Asia Pacific and Middle East (APME) in Lombok, Indonesia. This global competition challenges students to design energy-efficient vehicles, encouraging innovation and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Since its inception in 1985, the Shell Eco-marathon has provided a platform for students worldwide to showcase their skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), emphasizing sustainable innovation. The competition aligns with Shell’s mission of promoting cleaner energy solutions.
Serge Bernal, Vice President of Corporate Relations at Shell Pilipinas, highlighted the event’s role in promoting STEM and fostering international collaboration. Participating teams from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, Mapua University, Adamson University, University of Mindanao, Jose Rizal University, and De La Salle University Manila represent the best of Filipino engineering talent, striving for energy- efficient and sustainable vehicle designs.
Miguel Licuanan, team manager from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, emphasized the importance of teamwork and problem-solving in overcoming challenges. Karise Evangeline Carlos, team manager from Mapúa University, noted the development of both technical and soft skills crucial for future engineering careers.
The Shell Eco-marathon supports the Philippine government’s science and technology roadmap by nurturing competitive STEM talents. According to Bernal, the competition is a step towards integrating technology and sustainability, preparing students to lead in STEM fields globally.
