Japanese carmaker Toyota has expanded its compact SUV lineup with the introduction of the new Toyota Raize GR Sport, a more dynamic and feature-rich version of the popular Raize, designed to appeal to younger, sport-minded buyers.

Visually, the Raize GR Sport stands apart from the regular Raize variants through motorsport-inspired design elements. These include a sportier front bumper, a more aggressive grille treatment, blacked-out exterior trims, and exclusive GR Sport badging. The model rides on a set of 17-inch black alloy wheels, further reinforcing its athletic appearance. Two-tone exterior color options are also available, enhancing its youthful and premium appeal.

Inside, the cabin features GR-specific detailing, including contrast stitching and sport-themed trim accents. These come on top of driver-oriented ergonomics and tech, including a digital instrument display and a centrally mounted touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The head unit even has an exclusive GR welcome graphic to complete the look.

Additionally, the steering wheel comes with GR branding and, just like the regular Raize, a pair of paddle shifters to further channel that racing look and feel. One notable thing about the paddle shifters is that it is there, despite the model having a CVT, a combination that’s rather uncommon in the compact SUV segment. According to Toyota, the paddle shifters+CVT combo is its way of giving the model a more engaging driving character, allowing the driver to manually override the function of the CVT as needed.

Powering the Raize GR Sport is a 1.0-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder gasoline engine, tuned to deliver a balance of performance and efficiency for city driving. The turbo helps improve responsiveness, making it suitable for daily driving while maintaining manageable running costs.

Safety and driver assistance are also emphasized. Depending on the trim, the Toyota Raize GR Sport can be equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense, the brand’s suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The Toyota Safety Sense includes features such as pre-collision warning, lane departure alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Autocar’s Take

The introduction of the Toyota Raize GR Sport shows how far the compact SUV segment has evolved. Features like paddle shifters, one common on higher-end, higher-spec models, are now filtering down to more accessible vehicles. While the Raize GR Sport isn’t a full-on performance SUV, its GR design upgrades and driver-focused additions give it a stronger, more emotive appeal.

Toyota clearly understands that today’s buyers want more than practicality – they also want involvement and character. And the Raize GR Sport delivers that balance.

With the Toyota Raize GR Sport now out in Indonesia, it is realistic to think that the Philippine market will also be allocated with such a sporty-looking version of the Raize, one of Toyota Motor Philippines’ (TMP) popular models. No announcement from TMP has been made as of now regarding a local-spec Raize GR Sport. But considering how many Filipino buyers are into the cool vibe a sporty-looking car can offer, it is possible that the Raize GR Sport could land on local shores… someday.
