The Automotive Body Manufacturer’s Association of the Philippines (ABMAP) continues to express its full support to the government’s Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program.
In a statement, the group cited numerous reasons leading to strong support.
According to the organization, not all modern PUV units are completely built-up units from China. ABMAP noted that more than 80 percent of the modern PUV examples retailed locally are assembled in the Philippines. Such action helps generate jobs for automotive body builders as well as upstream and downstream industries.
The Association shared that all modern PUV units are assembled in the country using brand-new truck chassis, which guarantees longer life span compared to old jeepneys. In addition, the new PUVs are fitted with air-conditioning systems and wider seats to assure comfortable travels.
The group also noted that the modern PUV units comply with both international and local standards, making it safe.
Further, the modern transport system is equipped either with Euro 4-rated engines or electric motors, the ABMAP said.
In the same press statement, the association shared that the government provides an increased subsidy for PUVs that eases the financial burden to operators, Additionally, the 5-6-7 financing scheme encourages them to take vehicles as the system allows the driver to be the owner of the modern PUV after seven years of payment.
On the other hand, those who are driving under a transport corporation are given a fixed daily income with social benefits like Social Security System, Pag-IBIG, and PhilHealth, ABMAP stated.
Lastly, the P2.1-P2.2 million pricing for modern PUV is the standard.
“The ABMAP supports the PUV Modernization Program because it benefits the economy, creates jobs, improves passenger safety and comfort, and reduces emissions. The program ensures that drivers have access to social welfare benefits and can afford to pay for their PUVs. With more than 80% of modern PUVs in the Philippines locally made, the program also helps generate jobs for body builders and other industries,” the group ended.
