Pajero iO rumored to be revived using XForce bones

The Mitsubishi Pajero name may be on the verge of expanding once again. Fresh reports from Japan suggest that the long-dormant Pajero iO could return as a compact SUV built on the underpinnings of the Mitsubishi Xforce sold in Southeast Asian markets, including the Philippines.

While Mitsubishi has yet to make any official announcement, the speculation, as reported by Japanese media outlet Best Car, has sparked interest among enthusiasts who remember the Pajero iO as the smaller, more urban-focused sibling of the larger Pajero SUV. Originally introduced in the late 1990s, the model combined compact dimensions with genuine off-road capability, making it a distinctive offering in Mitsubishi’s lineup.

The latest rumors point to the Xforce as the most logical foundation for a modern interpretation of the Pajero iO. The compact crossover already occupies the size category that a reborn Pajero iO would likely target.

Using an existing platform would allow Mitsubishi to reduce development costs while quickly entering one of the industry’s most competitive segments. Compact SUVs continue to attract strong demand globally, with buyers seeking a combination of practicality, elevated ride height, and improved fuel efficiency.

However, a simple badge swap would likely not be enough. The Pajero name carries expectations of adventure and capability, meaning any future Pajero iO would need features that distinguish it from the standard Xforce. Industry observers speculate that an all-wheel-drive system could be a key addition, helping the model better align with Mitsubishi’s off-road heritage.

Electrification could also play a major role. Mitsubishi has been steadily expanding its hybrid and electrified offerings, and a compact hybrid SUV wearing the Pajero iO badge would fit neatly into the brand’s broader strategy.

For Philippine buyers, the possibility is particularly interesting given the Xforce’s growing presence in the local market. A more rugged derivative with enhanced drivetrain options could appeal to customers looking for something more adventurous without stepping up to a larger SUV.

For now, the rumored return of the Pajero iO remains just that—a rumor. Still, if Mitsubishi chooses to leverage the Xforce architecture, it could provide a practical pathway for bringing one of its familiar SUV nameplates back to life.

Autocar’s Take

The idea of a Pajero iO revival based on the Mitsubishi Xforce makes a lot of sense in today’s market. Compact SUVs continue to dominate sales charts, and automakers are now turning to existing platforms to create new products more efficiently.

If Mitsubishi does bring back the Pajero iO, the challenge will be giving it enough character to justify the iconic name. Buyers will expect more than styling changes. Features such as all-wheel drive, hybrid technology, and improved off-road capability could help separate it from the Xforce. Done right, a new Pajero iO could strengthen Mitsubishi’s SUV lineup considerably.
