The Mitsubishi Xpander is a staple for Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC), appealing to thousands of buyers who want something family-friendly and easy to live with. The same story plays out across Southeast Asia.

But time doesn’t stand still. The first-generation Xpander launched back in 2017, and even with a few updates and the Xpander Cross joining the lineup, the platform is quietly inching toward its tenth year.

The good news for Mitsubishi fans – and the thousands of Filipino families who keep choosing the Xpander – is that a replacement is already in the pipeline. According to Mitsubishi’s latest product roadmap, a new Xpander is set to arrive between 2026 and 2031, which means we could see a new-generation model in about four years.

Of note, the info comes straight from Mitsubishi’s Mid-Long Term Vision presentation – the same one where the company confirmed the Pajero is making a comeback. Tucked into the 30-page future product plans was a glimpse at Mitsubishi’s ASEAN strategy, and there it was: a next-generation Xpander quietly listed in the regional lineup.

The same presentation gives us a peek at how Mitsubishi views Southeast Asia. The Philippines and Vietnam are now marked as priority countries, with plans to double down on what already works. Mitsubishi even highlighted the strong growth in the Philippines, driven by a steady stream of ASEAN model launches, making it clear that our market is more important than ever.

Mitsubishi isn’t stopping at new models, either. The Japanese marque is hinting at bigger electrification plans, with more hybrids and plug-in hybrids on the way, as well as tech designed specifically for ASEAN markets. Globally, 13 new models are in the works from 2026 to 2031, and hybrids are definitely part of that mix.

Autocar’s Take

For MMPC, this is a key moment. The Xpander is their main volume driver, keeping Mitsubishi front and center in a market that loves practical family cars. Letting it get too old was never really on the table. A new-generation Xpander in the next few years should help Mitsubishi stay in the game, especially as rivals roll out newer designs, more tech, and more electrified choices.

If there’s one thing to hope for, it’s that Mitsubishi goes all-in on hybrid tech for the next Xpander. The groundwork is already in place. MMPC has said it’ll build hybrid electric vehicles locally, and a hybrid Xpander just makes sense for a model that already ticks most family boxes. The next version just needs to do it all a bit more efficiently.
