Kia is reportedly dropping gasoline engines for the next-generation Sportage, preferring to implement a “hybrid-only” strategy. The next-gen Kia Sportage, which is expected to debut in 2027, could be the first Kia model to come with a 100 percent hybrid variants. This is a significant move for the Korean car brand in unifying the Sportage’s powertrain options. (Note: photos shown here are the current-generation Kia Sportage model)
The current Kia Sportage, which is unfortunately not available in the Philippine market, offers wide powertrain options that include the traditional gas engine, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). But for the next-gen Sportage, which is said to debut in Q3 2027, Kia will reportedly offer only two powertrain options: HEV and PHEV, according to Korean Car Blog.
Kia’s decision to go for a hybrid-only strategy is to streamline the powertrain options of the next-gen Sportage. It’s also a move in response to the more stringent global emission regulations, an issue that Mazda is also facing for its next-gen MX-5, prompting the Japanese car brand to explore the use of synthetic fuels.

As such, the strategy to go hybrid-only for the next-gen Sportage allows Kia to offer a product that meets global regulations, which also caters to consumers who are not yet ready to purchase an all-electric vehicle.
Kia also sees going hybrid-only as a smart move when considering overall sales, as global demand for vehicles with a hybrid powertrain is on an upward trend. This is also what Honda realized, as it realigned its strategy and began to favor introducing more hybrid vehicles starting in 2027. Honda noted that there is a “slowdown in the expansion of [electric vehicles]” in the market. As such, the next-gen Honda HR-V could most likely feature the car brand’s new hybrid technology.
With the move to offer only HEV and PHEV variants, the next-gen Kia Sportage is expected to improve overall performance, especially when it comes to fuel efficiency and power output delivery. The next-gen Kia Sportage PHEV trim is reportedly aiming to offer a pure electric driving range of more than 100 kilometers.

Autocar’s Take
Kia’s move to offer hybrid-only variants for the next-gen Sportage makes sense, as it will allow the Korean car brand more flexibility in terms of meeting global emission standards while also having a product that could appeal to market demand. The next-gen Sportage is said to make its debut in Q3 2027, and we expect more updates or information about the said vehicle in the coming months.
Kia Philippines has dropped the Sportage from its model lineup since 2021. With the next-gen model coming in 2027, it could be a nice addition to Kia PH’s model lineup as the Sportage can sit between the Seltos and the Sorento, giving the local market more options.
