Driverless Xiaomi YU7 GT conquers Nürburgring Nordschleife

Xiaomi has added another milestone to its growing motorsports and technology résumé after its YU7 GT completed a fully autonomous lap of Germany’s Nürburing Nordschleife, becoming the first driverless vehicle to officially record a lap at the famed circuit.

According to Xiaomi, the YU7 GT navigated the 20.8-kilometer track without a human driver and posted a lap time of 10:29.483. The run showcased the company’s latest autonomous driving technology on one of the world’s most demanding racetracks, known for its high-speed sections, elevation changes, and more than 150 corners.

While Xiaomi described the achievement as a world first for the Nürburgring, it is not the first time an autonomous vehicle has set a circuit lap record. In 2017, the NIO EP9 completed a driverless lap of the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, setting what was then recognized as an autonomous vehicle lap record and demonstrating the potential of self-driving technology in controlled track environments.

What makes Xiaomi’s accomplishment notable is the venue itself. The Nürburgring Nordschleife is widely regarded as one of the toughest proving grounds in the automotive world, regularly used by manufacturers to test vehicle durability, handling, and performance. Successfully completing a lap without human intervention highlights how far autonomous systems have progressed in processing complex driving scenarios.

The autonomous run was significantly slower than the YU7 GT’s performance with a driver behind the wheel. Xiaomi’s SUV has previously recorded laps in the seven-minute range at the Nordschleife, including a production SUV record run of 7:22.755. The difference underscores the current priorities of autonomous systems, which remain focused on safety, precision, and consistency.

For Xiaomi, the achievement extends its use of the Nürburgring beyond pure performance benchmarking. The company has used the circuit to validate both hardware and software capabilities, from record-setting lap times to advanced driver-assistance and autonomous technologies. As automakers continue to invest in software-defined vehicles, the latest driverless lap tells the race for faster cars may soon be accompanied by a parallel race for smarter ones.

Autocar’s Take

The lap time itself is almost secondary to the achievement. Nobody is going to mistake a 10-minute autonomous run for a record-setting performance lap, but that was never the point. The fact that a vehicle can navigate the Nürburgring Nordschleife without a human driver is a reminder of how quickly automotive software is evolving. It’s also worth noting that Xiaomi isn’t the first to showcase autonomous circuit driving, with NIO demonstrating similar capabilities years ago. Still, completing a driverless lap at the Nordschleife carries unique weight.
