BMW has revealed the fifth-generation X5, featuring a bold new style and five powertrain options. The all-new 2027 BMW X5 draws inspiration from the German car brand’s Neue Klasse, a future-focused design language that’s also integrated with the new BMW 7 Series and the all-new BMW i3 electric vehicle (EV).
The all-new BMW X5 features a bolder, sharper exterior than the outgoing model. The X5’s bolder presence can be seen at its front end, as it now appears wider than the old version. The fascia features a glowing grille alongside new “double-X” headlights, which are arguably the most standout design detail when the vehicle is viewed from the front. The double X light pattern combines the daytime running lights, turn indicators, and the headlights.
The side of the 2027 BMW X5 features a crisp and sleek finish. The X5 has crisp lines that are seen on its fender flares, which add a muscular look to the whole side profile. Then, the door handles are seamlessly placed into the window pillars, which open the doors electronically with a light touch. The placement of the door handles gives the X5’s side profile a sleek styling.

The rear, on the other hand, features a sharp and aggressive design, which is highlighted by the large bumper and distinctive LED taillights that occupy almost the whole width of the X5’s rear. Of note, BMW decided to drop the X5’s split tailgate opening, a feature that has been synonyms to the vehicle since it was launched. As such, it now comes with a simpler tailgate design.
Inside, the BMW X5 features a redesigned cabin layout, which looks more modern, refined, and uncluttered. The German automaker said that it has equipped the X5’s interior with premium natural materials like real glass and slate, which are integrated into the dashboard. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the physical buttons are mostly gone, giving the X5’s cabin a clutter-free layout.
Taking up most of the dashboard are two massive screens, and the one in the middle is a 17.9-inch central display complemented by a new passenger screen. It also has a BMW Panoramic Vision, which is projected on the car’s windshield, a large panoramic sunroof, a new ambient light strip that wraps around the cabin, and a premium Bowers and Wilkins sound system.

In terms of safety, the advanced driver assistance systems provide Level 2 automation, which includes lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. A new feature called Soft-Stop also ensures the smoothest braking action possible, according to BMW.
Now onto the powertrain. The all-new BMW X5 comes with five powertrain options, which include gas mild hybrid, diesel mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV), and hydrogen.
The gasoline mild hybrid (X5 40) features a 3.0-liter Twin Power Turbo engine that puts out 400 horsepower and 580 Nm of torque, which is assisted by a 48-volt electric motor that delivers 19 horsepower and 61 Nm of torque. The diesel mild hybrid (X5 40d), on the other hand, makes 312 horsepower and 670 Nm of torque, and it also comes with a 48-volt electric motor.

Meanwhile, the PHEV comes with a 3.0-liter Twin Power Turbo that produces 489 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque, and features a 26.5 kWh battery. It is then claimed to go from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and can drive on electric power alone for over 70 kilometers.
Then, the all-electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive is equipped with dual electric motors, and can generate 578 horsepower and 805 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds before hitting a top speed of 210 km/h. BMW said that it can do up to 845 kilometers of driving range on a single full charge.
BMW plans to launch the iX5 Hydrogen at a later date, and it is set to be the first hydrogen-powered BMW production vehicle. It will come with BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage technology and an innovative high-voltage battery, which is claimed to deliver a range of up to 750 kilometres.
The production of the all-new X5 will begin this August at BMW’s factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with the first models arriving in showrooms in late November, while the all-electric and plug‑in hybrid versions will follow in early 2027.

Autocar’s Take
The all-new 2027 BMW X5 brings a bold, modern change by using the brand’s future-focused “Neue Klasse” design language. The exterior gets a bolder look, and the dual X headlights are arguably one of the standout features of the all-new X5.
The side and the rear also look nice, as it plays with aggressive styling along with a sleek and premium finish. Of note, BMW dropped the X5’s popular split tailgate for a simpler rear design, which is not a bad thing. However, BMW purists might think otherwise.
The cabin is clean and modern-looking. But the five powertrain options of the all-new X5 show that BMW wants to cover all the bases, making the X5 a versatile vehicle once it is launched in the global market.
