New BMW 7 Series enters the Neue Klasse era

German carmaker BMW recently introduced the facelifted 7 Series for 2026, bringing what it describes as its biggest update yet for the flagship luxury sedan. Following this reveal, the company said that it will move up the updated 7 Series into production this July at its Dingolfing plant in Germany.

The new 7 Series introduces several technologies that preview BMW’s upcoming “Neue Klasse” direction. It blends updated digital systems, expanded electrification, and new driver-assistance features, giving the brand’s top-end sedan a significantly fresh look and feel.

Visually, the updated 7 Series adopts a cleaner and more upright appearance. It features illuminated kidney grilles, slimmer crystal-style headlights, redesigned rear lighting, and newly available 22-inch wheels. BMW will also continue offering M Performance variants and expanded customization options through its BMW Individual, the brand’s factory customization program that lets buyers tailor colors, materials, and finishes to create a more bespoke version of their rides.

The interior is where BMW gave the 7 Series a major technology overhaul. A new Panoramic iDrive system running the BMW Operating System X is the centerpiece, while a new passenger display screen debuts on the model. Rear passengers can also access an upgraded theatre screen for streaming, gaming, and video calls. Other available features include a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with Dolby Atmos support, executive lounge seating, four-zone climate control, and powered automatic doors.

According to BMW, the updated 7 Series will still be offered with multiple powertrain choices. These include mild-hybrid gasoline and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric variants under the i7 badge. The automaker claims the latest electrified versions can deliver over 720 km of driving range, courtesy of the latest BMW eDrive battery technology.

The sedan also gains expanded driver-assistance systems with additional AI-supported functions for parking and semi-automated driving. In some European markets, the Motorway Assistant system will enable hands-free driving at up to 130 km/h.

BMW is also continuing development of the armored 7 Series Protection model. As an executive sedan for high-profile individuals, this is essential as it is designed to meet high-level ballistic protection standards while retaining the driving dynamics expected from the brand.

Beyond performance and luxury, BMW says the new 7 Series was developed with a stronger focus on sustainability, including increased use of recycled materials, renewable energy in production, and lower lifecycle carbon emissions for electric variants like the i7.

Autocar’s Take

Luxury car launches often get buried under layers of glitz and glamour. But beneath the heavy messaging, the updated BMW 7 Series is a big step for the brand. The most significant takeaway here is how BMW is bringing its upcoming Neue Klasse technology into a production flagship much earlier than expected.

The expanded EV range, upgraded cabin tech, and improved passenger-focused features show where BMW’s luxury sedans are heading. At the same time, BMW wisely keeps multiple powertrain options available rather than forcing a full EV transition overnight. For buyers in this segment, flexibility still matters just as much as technology.
