Subaru has formally unveiled the WRX STI Sport♯ (Sharp) Prototype at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, making one of the brand’s headline announcements at the annual performance and customization event. The STI Sport# was presented as an STI “complete car” concept, developed by Subaru’s performance division, Subaru Tecnica International (STI).
In more detail, the Subaru WRX STI Sport# is based on the current WRX STI model sold in the Japanese market. The brand positioned the model as a higher-performance, driver-focused version of its most popular sport sedan. It boasts enhanced mechanical components with STI-specific tuning and design elements.
According to Subaru, the WRX STI Sport# is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, paired with a turbocharged boxer engine. The return of a manual gearbox is a notable feature, aligning with STI’s emphasis on driver engagement. While Subaru has not disclosed any specific date with regard to performance figures, it has confirmed that the car comes with STI-tuned suspension, braking, and chassis components, developed to improve handling, stability, and overall driving performance.
Visually, the WRX STI Sport# features exterior revisions consistent with STI performance models of recent years. These include unique aerodynamic parts, an exclusive set of wheels, and STI badging. Inside, the prototype showcases sport-oriented interior upgrades such as Recaro seats, trim accents, and a cockpit layout designed to support more dynamic driving.
Subaru stated that the WRX STI Sport# is intended primarily for the Japanese domestic market (JDM), with plans for a limited release scheduled for 2026. Production volume and final specs will be announced closer to its official market launch.
Subaru’s 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon appearance shows its continued focus on performance-oriented models under the STI banner. This refreshed focus was headlined by its participation at the 2025 Japan Mobility show, where it showcased two STI concepts – the electrified Performance-E STI and the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) powered Performance-B STI. While the WRX STI Sport# remains a prototype, Subaru confirmed that it reflects a “near-production” concept, previewing an upcoming addition to its WRX lineup.
