Volvo Amazon at 70: How its safety legacy lives in the EX30

Volvo Cars Philippines is marking 70 years of the Volvo Amazon, a model that helped shape the Swedish automaker’s reputation for safety, by highlighting how its pioneering approach to occupant protection continues in the all-electric Volvo EX30.

Hariphil Asia Resources Inc. (HARI), the exclusive distributor of Volvo Cars in the Philippines, is using the anniversary to draw a connection between the Amazon introduced in 1956 and the safety technologies found in its modern vehicles.

The Amazon became an important part of Volvo’s safety history through its association with the development of the three-point seat belt. In 1959, Volvo implemented the modern version developed by engineer Nils Bohlin and made the patent available to other manufacturers, allowing the technology to benefit motorists beyond the brand.

The decision reflected a principle that continues to define Volvo’s approach: automotive innovation should serve a practical purpose, particularly when protecting people on the road.

“Safety is not simply part of Volvo’s history; it is a responsibility that continues to shape its future,” said HARI Vice Chairman, President, and CEO Maria Fe Perez-Agudo. She described the Amazon as a defining milestone in the company’s efforts to make innovation meaningful for everyday mobility.

Today, Volvo carries that philosophy into the EX30, a compact, fully electric SUV equipped with a range of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies.

These include Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Aid, and automatic emergency braking with vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detection. The EX30 also features Rear Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake, Door Opening Alert, and a Driver Alert System.

Depending on equipment level, the electric SUV also offers Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control, Traffic Jam Assist, front and rear parking assistance, and Park Pilot Assist. These systems are designed to help drivers monitor their surroundings, identify potential hazards, and respond to changing traffic conditions.

The EX30’s safety credentials include a five-star rating from Euro NCAP’s 2024 assessment. It scored 88% for Adult Occupant Protection, 85% for Child Occupant Protection, 79% for Vulnerable Road Users, and 80% for Safety Assist.

The comparison between the Amazon and EX30 illustrates how automotive safety has evolved from passive protection, such as seat belts, to electronic systems that can warn drivers and help prevent collisions.

For Volvo, however, the central idea remains the same: technology matters most when it makes mobility safer for people.

Filipino buyers interested in the Volvo EX30 can visit Volvo Cars Makati to explore the vehicle and its features. HARI also announced an exclusive offer for the EX30 Core and EX30 Ultra, although the announcement did not specify the offer’s details.

Autocar’s Take

Volvo’s 70-year safety story is a reminder that meaningful automotive innovation does not always begin with flashy technology. The three-point seat belt was a relatively simple idea, but making its patent available to other manufacturers helped extend its benefits beyond Volvo owners. Today, the EX30 represents a different era, with electronic systems designed to detect hazards and assist drivers, honoring the timeless classic Volvo Amazon with a nod it deserves.

These features are useful, but they should complement attentive driving, first and foremost. For Filipino buyers considering an electric SUV, Volvo’s safety heritage adds context to the EX30’s appeal, although local pricing, ownership costs, and equipment availability also deserve consideration.
