Tesla Model Y L gets faster acceleration as charging network grows

Tesla is making a move with the Model Y L that could matter in a market where buyers expect an electric vehicle to offer more than efficiency.

The six-seat Model Y L now gets a quicker 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds, down from five seconds. Tesla says the improved acceleration is now standard. The SUV retains a claimed range of up to 681 km under WLTP testing.

On paper, the change looks modest. In everyday use, quicker acceleration can make a family-oriented EV feel more responsive, particularly when merging onto faster roads. It also strengthens the Model Y L’s performance argument without changing its basic positioning as a practical family vehicle.

But the more interesting part of Tesla Philippines’ announcement may be what is happening around the vehicle.

The company is expanding its presence outside Metro Manila over the coming months, with a Tesla activation at SM City Clark running from October 2 to 18. Customers who visit the activation and complete a reservation during the campaign can receive up to 5,000 km in Supercharging credits.

The company is also opening a new Destination Charging station at SM City Clark. The site has four charging slots at the mall’s North Parking area, with charging capability of up to 11 kW. Tesla also points to an Accredited Body Shop at LAUS Auto Service Center, giving customers in Northern Luzon access to after-sales support.

Tesla Philippines says it currently has four Supercharger sites with 16 Superchargers and 10 Destination Charging sites with 40 Wall Connectors. More locations are planned in Baguio, Manila, BGC, Makati and Robinsons Magnolia for Supercharging, while SM City Cebu and SM Olongapo Central are listed for Destination Charging.

That expansion could ultimately be more important to Tesla’s Philippine ambitions than a half-second improvement in acceleration. For EV buyers, especially those considering longer-distance travel, confidence in where they can charge and obtain support is part of the ownership proposition.

Tesla is also promoting incentives, including Model 3 financing from ₱29,990 per month, free Supercharging credits, one year of complimentary comprehensive insurance, limited-time purchase incentives and a complimentary home charger for eligible customers.

Taken together, the announcement shows Tesla addressing two sides of EV ownership: making its vehicles more appealing and making the ecosystem around them easier to use. The Model Y L’s performance upgrade may grab attention, but the expansion of charging and support could be the more consequential development for local EV buyers.

Autocar’s Take

The Model Y L’s acceleration boost is the attention-grabber, but Tesla’s charging expansion is the bigger story. For Philippine EV buyers, performance figures are only part of the equation. Buyers also need confidence that charging will be accessible and that support is available beyond Metro Manila. The new SM City Clark charging site, planned Superchargers, and after-sales support suggest Tesla is trying to strengthen that ownership ecosystem.

The 4.5-second acceleration makes the Model Y L more appealing, but a denser charging network could do more to convince cautious buyers that an American electric family vehicle is practical for everyday Philippine driving.
