NLEX is intensifying its flood control efforts

Most of July 2025 saw the surge of typhoons that intensified the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat.” This long cycle of severe weather patterns has flooded many parts of Luzon and most of Metro Manila, resulting in countless affected communities and destroyed livelihoods.

According to NLEX Corporation, a toll operator subsidised by the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), severely affected areas along its expressway network include Balintawak Cloverleaf, Valenzuela, and Meycauayan in Bulacan. The corporation deemed this a very urgent and serious matter, hence its decision to intensify its flood control efforts along its expressways as the storm surge continued. This is in an effort to minimize further flooding in case of more heavy rain in the coming days.

Under the leadership of NLEX Officer In Charge and MPTC Chief Finance Officer Luis Reñon, NLEX mobilized a team to inspect flood control facilities in Valenzuela. These include water pumping stations, detention tanks, and pipelines. Moreover, NLEX also implemented drainage cleaning, removal of waste materials from creeks and rivers, and clearing of waterways connected to the expressways.

To assist with water removal, NLEX deployed vacuum trucks to key locations including Balintawak, Paso de Blas, and Tulaoc. These units are working to clear clogged canals and prevent further water buildup. Aside from its continued monitoring of potential creek and river overflow, NLEX also made sure that rescue boats are at the ready in case of emergencies.

Finally, NLEX reassured that its social media channels are active 24/7 to provide real-time traffic updates. For immediate assistance, NLEX can be reached through its hotline 1-35000 or via its Facebook and X accounts (@NLEXexpressways).
