Geely Motor Philippines is gearing up to introduce a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model. Confirming earlier reports, the upcoming model will most likely be the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 PHEV. However, it seems the astronomy-themed model name will be dropped in favor of a more familiar-sounding one for the local market. Get ready to say hello to the Geely EX5 EM-I – a stark challenger to the highly popular BYD Sealion 6 DM-i.
Globally, the Galaxy Starship 7 is positioned as a PHEV model that delivers the best of both electric-only and conventional hybrid driving. It is built on Geely’s latest PHEV architecture and is offered with the brand’s EM-I hybrid system technology. As such, it pairs a non-turbo gasoline engine with an electric motor and a dedicated battery pack, enabling extended electric-only driving for urban use. Additionally, it is equipped with modern driver-assistance systems, a digital cockpit, and connected features consistent with Geely’s Galaxy lineup.

Under the EX5 EM-I nameplate for the Philippines, the model is expected to carry the same core electrification concept, allowing drivers to complete short daily trips on pure electric power while relying on the combustion engine for extended journeys. This dual-capability approach to vehicle powertrains is increasingly relevant in the Philippine context, where charging infrastructure continues to develop unevenly across regions. In other words, the Geely EX5 EM-I aims to address concerns regarding charging station availability and range anxiety, the worry of losing battery power mid-journey.
The planned Philippine launch of the Geely EX5 EM-I also aligns with Geely’s local product roadmap. It follows the brand’s transition to direct local operations in early 2025, when Geely Motor Philippines Corporation, a direct subsidiary of Geely Auto Group, assumed responsibility to continue Geely’s local presence. The company has since stated its intention to introduce new models across various segments and to strengthen its sales network, after-sales service system, and logistics infrastructure.
The upcoming Geely EX5 EM-I is slated to make its local debut in Q1 of 2026.

Autocar’s Take
The planned arrival of the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 highlights a realistic approach to electrification that aligns with Philippine driving conditions. Geely even went so far as to call it the EX5 EM-I to engage Filipinos at home through its brand ecosystem. PHEVs continue to make sense locally, offering partial electrification without relying on charging infrastructure that remains in the “still developing” phase in the country.
While Geely has yet to disclose full specifications or pricing, the decision to introduce another PHEV demonstrates its real-world understanding of the regional market it operates in. If positioned competitively, the EX5 EM-I could strengthen Geely’s appeal among buyers who want to transition toward electrified mobility while retaining flexibility for longer, less predictable journeys.
