Ford’s high-performance electric pony just made a surprise debut

A few months ago, words were being floated around that Ford Philippines would launch an electrified SUV version of its iconic Mustang pony car, anytime this year. That time has finally arrived as Ford just pulled a big one alongside the launch of the new Territory Hybrid. Yes, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is now in the Philippines.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the brand’s first full-electric production car. As such, it’s got two electric motors that drive all four wheels and are powered by an 88 kWh battery. This battery provides 550 km of range and is able to be charged from 10% to 80% in under 45 minutes using a fast DC charger.

Ford claims that the Mustang Mach-E delivers 394 hp and 676 Nm of torque, which is slightly more powerful than the Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost pony car’s 315 hp and 475 Nm. So in terms of performance, the Mach-E sits above the Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost and below the Mustang 5.0 V8 GT, as the latter has 486 hp. Although, to be fair, the V8’s torque output is a tad lower at 567 Nm.

In terms of exterior styling, the Mach-E, being an SUV, presents a bigger stance while retaining the Mustang lineage’s styling cues. Touches like its fastback silhouette, long hood, and tri-bar tail lights connect the Mach-E to the timeless design of the Mustang, while presenting a new modern twist like the panoramic glass roof, black matte underbody garnish, and 19-inch aluminum wheels.

Up front, it’s got smooth and flushed-out surfaces, headlined by a frameless grille. The grille has active shutters, which let in ambient air to cool the battery and the electric motor as it moves. This is flanked by a pair of LED headlights that are shaped like blades to give the Mach-E a meaner face. The iconic horse emblem rounds out the look.

Ford mentioned that the “frunk” or front trunk, an added storage compartment under the hood as a result of it having no internal combustion engine, has drain holes. While basic, these holes make cleaning the frunk easier if a liquid cargo happens to spill in transit. Quite practical.

This practicality extends to the side and the rear end. The Mach-E’s doors come with sensors that detect someone close to them. These activate a set of touch buttons located on the door frame. When pressed, the doors would open slightly, allowing easier entry. On the back, Ford installed a hands-free liftgate system, a convenient feature that makes storing cargo easier if the hands are full or unable to physically operate the liftgate. Opening the liftgate provides a 402-litre cargo space. Folding down the rear seats will increase it to 1,420 liters.

The Mach-E’s cabin is greeted with synthetic leather seats, adhering to its environmentally friendly cause. The driver and front passenger seats come with power features and heating. Since it’s an electric vehicle (EV), the ride is almost silent. To balance, Ford placed a subwoofer and 10 premium audio speakers, routed to a 15.5-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

Standard safety features include nine airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, collision mitigation, blind spot detection, among others.

To celebrate the arrival of the Mustang Mach-E, Ford Philippines will be showing it off in various Ford dealerships in Alabang (August 13-17), Global City (August 20-25), Balintawak (August 27-September 1), EDSA and Libis (September 3-8), Marikina (September 10-14), and Cebu (September 30-October 5).

Ford Philippines retails the Mustang Mach-E at P3,499,000.
