American carmaker Ford plans to introduce a new affordable midsize pickup for international markets in 2027, with CEO Jim Farley saying the truck is being developed to attract new customers and strengthen the company’s position against lower-priced competitors.
Speaking during Ford’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call, Farley said the upcoming model would have a different cost structure from the current Ranger, with its base material costs expected to be 20% lower.
“Alongside strengthening our best franchises, we’re opening new paths to grow at more affordable price points. Next year, we will be launching our affordable midsize pickup for international markets,” Farley said.
The executive added that the truck is intended to bring more buyers into Ford’s international pickup lineup, following the approach taken by the Maverick in the United States.
“We expect the base material cost for this truck to be 20% lower than today’s Ranger. Just as Maverick has done in the U.S., this truck is designed to bring new customers into the Ford truck lineup internationally at a cost structure that allows us to compete,” he said.

The announcement points to a new addition to Ford’s global pickup strategy, rather than simply a lower-priced version of the existing Ranger. However, Ford has yet to disclose the vehicle’s name, specifications, pricing or initial markets.
The planned launch also comes as Ford seeks to broaden its reach in regions where affordability is becoming an increasingly important factor in vehicle purchasing decisions. Farley specifically identified Latin America and Southeast Asia as markets where competition is particularly intense.
The company sees an opportunity to reach customers who may find the Ranger positioned above their budgets, while retaining the existing pickup’s role in its lineup.
Despite the projected reduction in material costs, Ford has not confirmed whether the new truck will carry a retail price below the Ranger’s, or how much less it might cost. Material costs are only one component of a vehicle’s final price, which also reflects manufacturing, distribution, taxes and other expenses.
The international pickup is also distinct from the Fathom, Ford’s upcoming affordable electric vehicle based on its Universal Electric Vehicle platform. Ford is preparing the Fathom for a planned fourth-quarter 2027 launch in the United States.
For now, the new midsize pickup’s 2027 launch target offers the clearest indication of Ford’s plans. Whether the model will reach the Philippines remains unconfirmed, as does its eventual positioning against the Ranger in individual markets.

Autocar’s Take
Ford’s plan to introduce a more affordable midsize pickup for international markets is an interesting development, particularly as buyers become more conscious of vehicle prices. The promise of a 20% lower base material cost than the current Ranger suggests it is looking beyond its established pickup customers to reach a wider audience.
However, the real test will be how much the new truck eventually costs and what compromises, if any, come with making it more affordable. For Southeast Asia, the announcement is worth watching. A competitively priced Ford pickup could give buyers another alternative in an increasingly crowded market.
