Honda HR-V gets new comfort features and styling updates in Japan

Honda has introduced a refreshed version of the HR-V (Vezel) in Japan, adding convenience features for passengers and revising exterior details while keeping the compact SUV’s existing powertrain lineup.

The updated model went on sale in Japan on October 23, following its announcement a day earlier. Honda describes the changes under the theme “Maximize Urban Vezel,” with the focus on making the SUV more comfortable for use and giving variants a cleaner, more premium appearance.

For the entry-level G grade, Honda has added rear air vents and two USB Type-C charging ports for rear passengers. The headlights also receive black inner lenses, a subtle styling change intended to give the front end a darker look.

The hybrid e X gains the same rear ventilation and rear USB charging ports, along with heated driver and front passenger seats. These additions address comfort, particularly for occupants who may otherwise have limited access to airflow or charging points in the back.

Higher-spec e Z and e Z PLaY Package variants get more noticeable exterior revisions. Their wheel-arch trim and front, side and rear bumper garnishes are now finished in body color, reducing the contrast between the painted bodywork and the darker protective cladding. Honda says the treatment preserves the SUV’s rugged presence while giving it a more refined urban look.

The PLaY Package also receives 18-inch alloy wheels with a dark-clear finish. Across the range, the headlight inner lenses are now blackened.

Honda has not announced changes to the model’s powertrains. The G uses a 1.5-liter i-VTEC gasoline engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission and paddle shifters, while the e:HEV grades combine a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine with a two-motor hybrid system and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are offered on the hybrid grades.

Honda has not confirmed whether these updates will be introduced in the Philippines. The HR-V name is used in the local market, while Vezel is the nameplate used in Japan. Any Philippine-market availability, specifications or pricing would need to be confirmed by Honda Cars Philippines.

Autocar’s Take

Honda’s latest HR-V update is a reminder that improving a vehicle does not always require a major redesign. Adding rear air vents and USB-C charging ports may seem like minor changes, but they address everyday inconveniences that passengers notice, particularly on longer trips. The body-colored exterior trim also gives higher-spec variants a cleaner appearance without abandoning the SUV’s rugged character.

However, these revisions are incremental rather than transformative. Whether they make a meaningful difference to buyers will depend on pricing and equipment levels. For Philippine customers, the bigger question is whether Honda Cars Philippines will adopt these updates locally.
