The latest updates to the Isuzu D-Max and Isuzu mu-X may not turn heads immediately, but there is more going on beneath their familiar exteriors. For 2027, Isuzu has given both models a mild styling refresh and introduced a more powerful 2.2-liter twin-turbo diesel engine, adding a new dimension to two vehicles built around practicality and everyday usability.

Unveiled in Thailand, where both vehicles are manufactured, the updated models receive their most significant upgrade under the hood. The new engine builds on Isuzu’s 2.2-liter Ddi Maxforce diesel, which debuted globally in late 2024, and adds a second turbocharger to deliver stronger performance.

The result is an output of 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque, with peak pulling power available between 1,600 and 2,600 rpm. That represents a noticeable increase over the existing single-turbo 2.2-liter diesel, which produces 161 hp and 400 Nm.

More notably, the twin-turbo engine’s output exceeds that of the 3.0-liter diesel offered in the Australian-market versions of both vehicles. The larger engine produces 140kW and 450Nm, making the smaller powerplant an interesting alternative for buyers who want additional performance without moving up in displacement.

The new engine uses a high-pressure fuel-injection system with 10-hole injectors operating at up to 250 megapascals. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual gearbox and a retuned eight-speed automatic transmission.

Visually, however, the changes are more restrained. The D-Max gets revised front-end details, including updated grille inserts and subtly altered fog light surrounds on selected variants. Certain versions also feature a slightly smaller grille, while another design incorporates three rectangular openings near the leading edge of the hood.

The mu-X receives its own modest makeover, with revised grille detailing and a redesigned rear diffuser. The range-topping RS variant stands out with a gloss-black fog light surround, a new Supreme Onyx grille and lime-green accents across selected exterior and interior details. These touches give the SUV a sportier appearance without dramatically changing its overall design.

The updates reflect a familiar strategy: retain what already works while improving performance where it matters. For buyers who value diesel torque for hauling, highway cruising and tackling demanding roads, the new engine could be the more compelling reason to consider the refreshed models than their cosmetic revisions.

The updated D-Max and mu-X are scheduled to reach Thai showrooms toward the end of October 2026. Availability in Australia remains unconfirmed, while their arrival and specifications in the Philippines have yet to be established.

Autocar’s Take

The 2027 Isuzu D-Max and mu-X show why meaningful upgrades do not always require a complete redesign. Their revised styling is relatively subtle, but the new 2.2-liter twin-turbo diesel is the more interesting development. With 204 horsepower and 500Nm of torque, it offers stronger output than the 3.0-liter diesel currently available in Australian versions, at least on paper.

Whether that translates into better real-world performance and efficiency remains to be seen. For now, Philippine buyers will have to wait for confirmation from the brand regarding local availability. If introduced here, the updated engine could give Isuzu’s pickup and SUV a compelling selling point.
