Caltex Philippines shares tips on how to keep water out of your car’s fuel tank, which is important, especially during the typhoon and rainy season, when sudden downpours are a common occurrence.
Caltex PH lists out ways to help protect your vehicle from water contamination whenever sudden downpours lead to wet weather or flooding. Here are the tips shared by Caltex PH:
– Inspect your fuel cap for cracks or signs of wear and ensure it is securely closed after every refueling.
– Clear dirt, leaves, and other debris from around the fuel filler so rainwater drains away instead of pooling near the cap.
– Park your vehicle under cover, if possible, during heavy rain or flooding, and hold off on refueling after heavy downpours, especially in flood-prone areas, since rainwater can seep into the station’s fuel storage and dispensing equipment.
– Keep your tank reasonably full to lessen the air space and help reduce condensation forming inside the tank.
– If you frequently drive through flood-prone areas, consult your vehicle manufacturer or trusted mechanic for added precautions specific to your vehicle.
Meanwhile, Caltex PH also mentioned the following signs that water may have already gotten in your car’s fuel tank.
– Your car feels shaky when driving, especially at lower speeds.
– Difficulty starting the engine, or the car stalling shortly after it starts.
– The car may feel sluggish or less responsive, even when driving on flat roads.
– The car may produce rougher-than-usual exhaust and unusual engine noises, particularly after driving in heavy rain or wet conditions.
If several of these symptoms show up together, especially after driving through heavy rain or flooding, it’s best to have the fuel system checked by your mechanic before continuing to drive.
Caltex PH added that fuel quality matters too in helping prevent contamination. The oil company said that its fuels contain Techron, an active cleaning ingredient, which removes existing deposits and prevents new ones from forming. Caltex PH noted that its Techron technology helps achieve a cleaner engine and reliable performance even in wet conditions.
