The midsize SUV market in the Philippines is evolving, particularly in the segment’s P2-million price bracket. Diesel-powered favorites like the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Montero Sport continue to dominate. But electrified options are gradually entering the scene, with models like the Kia Sorento Turbo Hybrid and the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid leading the charge. Now, there’s a new challenger in the segment that could have what it takes to stand out. Enter the BYD Tang DM-i.
The BYD Tang DM-i, which was freshly launched, is priced at P2,098,000. This places it close to the Fortuner 2.4 V 4×2 AT at P2,000,000 and the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2.4 Black Series 4×2 AT with a price tag of P2,162,000. Meanwhile, the Kia Sorento 1.6 EX Turbo Hybrid 4×2 AT and the Hyundai Santa Fe 1.6 Calligraphy HEV are stickered at a significantly higher price point – P2,188,000 and P3,330,000, respectively, making the latter the priciest of the two.
While pricing and powertrains often headline many comparisons, comfort and convenience features matter just as much to SUV buyers.
The BYD Tang DM-i offers 7 seats with a premium interior layout. Some of its features include a large infotainment system, advanced driver-assist functions, and electric seating adjustment. These come on top of its plug-in hybrid powertrain. As a new entry, it places emphasis on tech-forward amenities to attract buyers exploring the world of electrification.

The Toyota Fortuner 2.4 V 4×2 AT, meanwhile, remains strong with its reputation for durability and widespread dealer support. It’s equipped with leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, touchscreen infotainment with smartphone connectivity, and Toyota Safety Sense.
As for the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2.4 Black Series 4×2 AT, it’s got leather upholstery, an 8-inch infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, and Mitsubishi’s safety assist features. Moreover, the Black Series adds cosmetic upgrades that enhance the 7-seat SUV’s sporty looks.
The Kia Sorento 1.6 EX Turbo Hybrid is positioned slightly higher than the aforementioned SUVs. As such, it combines a premium interior with efficiency. Its features include a panoramic sunroof, digital driver display, and a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems.
Buyers with around P3.3 million to spare can’t go wrong choosing the Hyundai Santa Fe 1.6 Calligraphy HEV. It offers premium features such as quilted leather seats, ambient lighting, advanced infotainment, and a comprehensive safety package.

At P2,098,000, the BYD Tang DM-i is not just about its plug-in hybrid tech. It also brings a feature set that’s competitive with well-established rivals. While the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Montero Sport remain dependable diesel choices, and the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe lean into hybrid comfort, the BYD Tang DM-i presents itself as a well-equipped electrified SUV that balances pricing, amenities, and future-ready power.
