The next-generation Toyota Corolla could be debuting next year, and it is looking to feature one of the most drastic design updates seen on the Japanese automaker’s compact sedan. While there are no official details yet, there are already several reports floating online about the new Corolla.

Among the reports circulating is that the next-gen Corolla could be equipped with Toyota’s newly developed 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain. A report from Japanese media Creative311 states that the new 1.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine will come with the codename N15.

The said power unit is also said to be the primary engine option for the next-generation model, which makes sense since having a hybrid power unit is like the middle ground, and it could be offered in several markets simultaneously. The newly developed 1.5-liter hybrid engine will also reportedly be equipped in other future Toyota models such as the next-gen Yaris Cross.

The report goes on by stating that the new 1.5-liter hybrid engine can deliver a fuel economy of over 30 km/l, making the next-gen Toyota Corolla a fuel-efficient sedan. To put things in perspective, Creative311 shared that the current Toyota Corolla Sedan hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) already delivers notable WLTC figures in Japan. The current Corolla base 2WD trims are said to be capable of achieving up to 29.8 km/l. As such, with the new N15 engine and the latest generation of Toyota’s hybrid system, the next-generation Corolla could indeed go beyond the 30 km/l fuel economy mark.

Aside from the new hybrid engine, the next-gen Toyota Corolla could also be coming in different body styles, according to reports. With that, the all-new Corolla could come in sedan, station wagon, and hatchback. Again, Toyota remains secretive when it comes to the details surrounding the next-gen Corolla. Until then, the reports circulating are just speculative and not official.

Autocar’s Take

The next-generation Toyota Corolla could be debuting in 2027, and arguably there’s a build-up to what the next-gen model will be like. As Toyota remains secretive, reports about the next-gen Corolla circulate, which is probably a win-win for the Japanese automaker since reports about the Corolla are free marketing. From the looks of it, the upcoming Corolla could bring one of the most drastic design updates seen on the Japanese automaker’s compact sedan. While there are no official details yet, the Corolla Concept that Toyota showcased at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show could give us an idea of what’s to come.
