In a significant relief effort, MPT South Corporation—concessionaire of the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) and Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX)—has teamed up with Maynilad Water Services, Inc. to donate ₱500,000 worth of rice to support local fisherfolk in Cavite. This initiative is in response to the recent oil spill and the severe impact of Typhoon Carina on the region.
The aid was officially handed over to former Governor Jonvic C. Remulla, benefiting coastal communities in Cavite City, Bacoor City, and the municipalities of Noveleta, Rosario, Kawit, Tanza, Naic, Maragondon, and Ternate.
The calamity began with the MT Terannova oil spill, releasing 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel into local waters, compounded by the destructive force of Typhoon Carina. Fisherfolk, whose livelihoods depend on the health of these waters, have been disproportionately affected, facing immense challenges in their recovery efforts.
“We appreciate the essential role of fisherfolk in maintaining the livelihoods of Caviteños and ensuring the province’s food security,” said Raul L. Ignacio, President and General Manager of MPT South. “The challenges they face during these crises not only disrupt their lives but also threaten the broader agricultural ecosystem. Our donation aims to provide immediate relief and inspire hope for recovery in these communities.”
Maynilad President Ramon S. Fernandez echoed the importance of rallying support for affected fisherfolk during this trying time.
MPT South is part of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), which also manages several other major expressways, including NLEX, SCTEX, NLEX Connector, and CCLEX.
