Looking back to this year’s Manila International Auto Show (MIAS), Chinese carmaker Omoda & Jaecoo Philippines (O&J PH), previewed the J7 SHS, the brand’s first hybrid electric SUV. This model is positioned to challenge the local hybrid and compact SUV market. Now, O&J PH has announced that it will soon launch the J7 SHS with a claimed expected retail price of just below P1.6-million.

The letters “SHS” in the Jaecoo J7 SHS’s name stands for Super Hybrid System. As such, it’s powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. O&J PH says that the combined powertrain is rated at 275 hp and 365 NM of torque.

Highlighting its gasoline engine, O&J PH claimed that an internal independent fuel efficiency test was recently conducted to determine the J7 SHS’s fuel economy. The test area, which was plotted over a region of 418.9 km, saw the Jaecoo J7 SHS achieving 29.08 Km/L of fuel efficiency.

The hybrid system, on the other hand, gets its charge from an 18.3 KWh battery, which also supports fast DC charging from 30% to 80% in under 20 minutes. Moreover, the battery can also be charged en route. This is thanks to a technology called regenerative braking, which stores energy by using the kinetic force generated by applying the brakes. In practice, this feature tops up the energy supply of the battery every time the brakes are used, especially at low speeds.

O&J PH says that the J7 SHS is able to run in full electric vehicle (EV) mode for around 100 km on the highway. In the city, the brand shared that the aforementioned EV mode range could increase as a result of regenerative braking,

But as far as O&J PH is concerned, the hybrid powertrain is just the tip of the iceberg as the J7 SHS will arrive in the Philippines with an award already under its name. Just recently, the Jaecoo J7 SHS was given the Euro NCAP 5-Star award for its safety excellence in protecting occupants and pedestrians alike. The Euro NCAP also highlighted the J7 SHS’ assortment of safety features that include lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection system, among others.

All these technologies and advanced features are kept within the Jaecoo J7 SHS’s stylish design that is rugged, sleek, and functional. It’s got hidden door handles, LED lights, and four available colors – Moonlight Silver, Khaki White, Carbon Crystal Black, and Olive Grey. O&J Philippines also teased the 14.8-inch portrait-style infotainment display and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster as standard interior equipment.
