Honda could be preparing to take the current Civic Type R to an even more serious level. The Civic Type R HRC Concept shown earlier this year could eventually evolve into a production model, potentially giving the FL5 generation a fitting high-performance send-off.
The best part is that the car could see a possible 2027 arrival as per a report by Japanese media outlet Response.
The idea makes sense when you look at what Honda Racing Corporation has been doing with road-car development. The HRC name carries plenty of motorsport credibility, and Honda has already been exploring how that expertise can translate into production-based performance cars.
The Civic Type R HRC Concept provides a pretty good indication of what such a car could look like. Rather than simply adding a few cosmetic changes, the concept appears to focus on the areas that matter most when a performance car is pushed hard: aerodynamics, weight, suspension, braking and engine response.
That could mean a more aggressive body kit, additional aerodynamic elements, a larger rear wing and a more purposeful rear diffuser. Lightweight components and forged wheels could also help reduce unsprung mass, while suspension and brake upgrades would give the car greater capability on a circuit.
There has also been speculation that Honda could extract a little more power from the Type R’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The current Civic Type R already produces 330 hp, so even a modest increase would be enough to complement the HRC treatment.
More importantly, however, the focus could be on how that power is delivered rather than simply chasing a bigger number.
Weight reduction could be another important part of the formula. Reports suggest the potential HRC version could shed several kilograms compared with the standard Type R. That may not sound dramatic on paper, but reducing weight in the right areas can make a noticeable difference in steering response, braking and cornering.
There is a catch, though. Honda has not confirmed that a production Civic Type R HRC is coming. The reported 2027 timing, possible output and pricing should therefore be treated as speculation rather than finalized specifications.
Still, the prospect is interesting. Honda has a genuine motorsport division behind the HRC name, and the Civic Type R is already an established performance benchmark. Bringing the two together in a limited, more focused road car could give the FL5 an even more distinctive place in Type R history.
For enthusiasts, that possibility alone is worth watching. If Honda decides to make the leap from HRC concept to production car, this could be considerably more than another special-edition Civic.

The possibility of an HRC-developed Civic Type R is exciting because Honda would not need to reinvent the formula. The FL5 is already an exceptionally capable performance car, so an HRC version could focus on making it sharper, lighter and more track-oriented rather than simply adding more horsepower. The idea of Honda Racing Corporation having a greater presence in road cars is also something to take note.
That gives the HRC badge genuine meaning instead of making it just another special-edition label. Nothing is official yet, so expectations should remain measured. But if Honda does build this car, it could become a memorable final chapter for the FL5.
