BYD’s Yangwang appears to be preparing to take another big step into the ultra-luxury market, with two heavily camouflaged prototypes reportedly spotted testing in China. If these vehicles make it into production as expected, the Chinese automaker could soon have a sedan and SUV aimed squarely at the kind of territory traditionally occupied by Rolls-Royce.
The prototypes were reported being spotted undergoing testing. One appears to be a large luxury sedan, while the other is a sizeable SUV with a distinctly road-focused stance. While Yangwang has yet to officially confirm that either vehicle is intended to rival specific Rolls-Royce models, their proportions and positioning have naturally drawn comparisons with the Phantom and Cullinan.
The sedan is perhaps the more intriguing of the two. Its long body, upright proportions, substantial rear compartment, and formal silhouette give it the presence expected from a flagship luxury car. It also appears to sit above the Yangwang U7 in terms of size and positioning, potentially giving the brand a much more imposing flagship.
The SUV takes a different approach. Unlike the rugged Yangwang U8, which has become known for its extreme off-road capabilities and unusual water-wading abilities, this prototype looks considerably more focused on luxury road use. Its lower stance and large wheels suggest that Yangwang wants to explore a different side of the premium SUV market.

What makes the development particularly interesting is what lies underneath. Details remain unconfirmed, but BYD could potentially offer the vehicles with either plug-in hybrid or fully electric powertrains. Yangwang already has access to sophisticated electric architectures, including systems featuring independently controlled electric motors.
That technology could give these future flagships plenty of performance, but performance alone isn’t really the point here. At this level of the market, presence, refinement, rear-seat comfort, technology, and exclusivity matter just as much as outright power.
Yangwang is already positioned as BYD’s ultra-premium marque, sitting above brands such as Denza and Fang Cheng Bao within the group. The U8 and U8L have demonstrated that BYD is willing to enter price and luxury territory once dominated almost exclusively by established European marques.
The arrival of a flagship sedan and luxury SUV would take that strategy another step further.
For now, though, these remain test vehicles rather than confirmed production models. BYD has not officially revealed their final specifications, names, pricing, or launch plans.
Still, the message from these spy shots is hard to ignore: Yangwang isn’t content with simply building expensive Chinese cars. It appears to be preparing for a much bigger fight at the very top of the luxury market.

Autocar’s Take
Yangwang’s apparent move toward Rolls-Royce territory is one of those developments that makes you stop and look twice. BYD has already shown that it can build technologically sophisticated and seriously powerful vehicles, but ultra-luxury is a different game. A big sedan and SUV alone do not automatically make a brand a genuine rival to Rolls-Royce.
There is an enormous emphasis on craftsmanship, exclusivity, customization, and the ownership experience at that level. Still, the fact that Yangwang is even exploring this space says plenty about how ambitious BYD has become. The prototypes suggest this is no longer simply about competing on price or technology.
