China’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, BYD, has announced its largest vehicle recall to date, involving more than 115,000 units due to potential battery and component issues. The move underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring safety and product reliability amid its rapid global expansion.
According to a plan submitted by BYD to the State Administration for Market Regulation, the latest recall affects two models – the Tang SUV and the Yuan Pro, also known here in the Philippines as the BYD Atto 3. In more detail, BYD moved to recall 44,535 units of the Tang produced from March 2015 to July 2017. It also issued a recall for 71,248 units of the Yuan Pro made from February 2021 to August 2022.
The Tang models reportedly have component design flaws that could lead to abnormal operation. On the other hand, BYD said that the Yuan Pro’s issue involves how the battery was installed, which might affect long-term performance and safety. This latest action follows the brand’s recall it issued in January this year for 6,800 units of its Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid SUV due to potential fire risks. And in September 2024, a recall was also issued for around 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs due to a steering column issue that could cause overheating.

On a positive note, while recalls may raise questions about quality consistency, they are not uncommon in the automotive industry, particularly as manufacturers adapt newer battery technologies and scale up production. Industry experts note that EV manufacturers face unique challenges in balancing innovation with quality control, especially as production volumes rise and product lines diversify. For BYD, which now competes with giants such as Tesla and has entered markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, addressing issues transparently can help build and maintain consumer trust.
Industry observers see the recall as part of BYD’s growing maturity as a global automaker. By voluntarily coordinating large-scale corrective measures, the company demonstrates a proactive stance towards customer safety and regulatory compliance.
