The recent MG Philippines media drive wasn’t just about getting behind the wheel of the brand’s growing electrified lineup. Alongside the Hybrid+ models that took center stage during the event, MG also gave members of the media an early look at another vehicle waiting in the wings: the all-new MG S5 EV.
Although the crossover remained on static display and technical details for the Philippine market have yet to be announced, its presence was enough to signal the brand’s next step in expanding its local electric vehicle portfolio.
At first glance, the S5 EV looks like the natural evolution of the outgoing ZS EV. It carries a cleaner, more mature design while adopting MG’s latest styling language seen on newer global models. However, the changes go much deeper than its appearance.
Unlike the ZS EV, which traces its roots to a combustion-engine platform, the S5 EV is built from the ground up as an electric vehicle. It rides on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, the same dedicated EV architecture underpinning the acclaimed MG4 hatchback. That alone should translate to improvements in packaging, cabin space, ride quality, and overall driving dynamics. Internationally, the platform also brings rear-wheel drive, a layout that’s still uncommon among electric crossovers in this segment.
Stepping inside the preview unit revealed a cabin that feels noticeably more modern than MG’s current electric SUV. The dashboard adopts a cleaner layout dominated by a floating infotainment display, while the minimalist center console and improved material choices give it a more premium atmosphere.
But the best part? Despite the minimalist interior vibe, the S5 EV finally has more physical buttons, most especially for its air-conditioning system. This was proudly highlighted by MG Philippines during the drive event as a timely refresh from today’s trend of touch screen everything.
For now, MG Philippines is keeping local specifications, battery options, range figures, and pricing under wraps. Those details will likely come closer to its official launch. Overseas versions are offered with multiple battery choices and varying driving ranges depending on the market, so it remains to be seen which configuration will make its way here.
Still, the timing couldn’t be better. Interest in electric vehicles continues to grow, and competition in the compact electric SUV segment is becoming increasingly fierce. Once it officially arrives, the MG S5 EV will find itself going up against established players such as the BYD Atto 3, while also giving MG a more modern flagship for its battery-electric lineup.
From what we saw during the media drive, the S5 EV looks ready to become an important chapter in MG Philippines’ electrification journey. Now, all that’s left is to see when the covers come off for good and, more importantly, how aggressively MG decides to price it for Filipino buyers.

The MG S5 EV could become one of the more interesting electric vehicle launches in the Philippines, not because it promises groundbreaking technology, but because it appears to package proven EV engineering into the body style that most Filipinos already prefer. If MG prices it competitively, it has a real opportunity to shake up the growing electric crossover segment. Of course, pricing and specifications will ultimately determine its success.
Still, based on our first look, the S5 EV seems poised to build on the momentum established by the MG4 and give Filipino buyers another compelling reason to consider making the switch to electric.
