BYD seems to be preparing a significantly updated version of its Seagull electric hatchback. Over in China, a newly published regulatory filing revealed a larger body, more powerful electric motor, and a fresh exterior design.
Documents submitted to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), a necessary step before a vehicle can be sold in the country, show that the upcoming Seagull has grown considerably compared to the model currently on sale. The hatchback now measures 4,205 mm long, representing an increase of 425 mm over the existing version. Its wheelbase has also been extended, suggesting improvements in cabin space and overall practicality.
Beyond its larger dimensions, the updated Seagull is also set to receive a notable boost in performance. The filing lists a single electric motor producing 127 hp. That’s a substantial increase over the output of today’s Seagull, potentially giving the compact EV stronger acceleration and improved capability beyond city driving.

The redesign isn’t limited to what’s underneath. Images accompanying the filing reveal revised front and rear styling, including reshaped lighting elements and updated bumpers. The new proportions also give the hatchback a more mature appearance, moving it away from the ultra-compact look of the current model.
While the regulatory documents confirm that the vehicle continues to use BYD’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery technology, key details such as battery capacity, driving range, and charging specifications have yet to be disclosed. These are expected to be announced closer to the model’s official debut.
The larger footprint raises interesting questions about where the new Seagull will fit within BYD’s expanding EV lineup. With dimensions approaching those of larger hatchbacks, the model could appeal to buyers looking for more interior space without stepping into a crossover.
In the Philippine context, it’s still too early to say whether this redesigned Seagull is headed our way. BYD Cars Philippines has not announced plans to introduce the updated model locally, and the current Seagull remains one of the brand’s most accessible battery-electric offerings. Should it eventually arrive, the larger and more powerful Seagull could further strengthen BYD’s position in the growing entry-level EV segment while offering buyers an even more practical everyday electric hatchback.

Autocar’s Take
The BYD Seagull has already earned a reputation as one of the most accessible electric vehicles in several markets, including the Philippines. This latest update implies that BYD isn’t content with leaving it as a simple city car. By giving the BYD Seagull a larger body and a more powerful electric motor, the company appears to be responding to buyers who want a compact EV that’s equally comfortable beyond urban streets. While there’s no confirmation yet that this version will reach Philippine showrooms, it certainly shows how quickly BYD continues to evolve its electric vehicle lineup to stay ahead in a fiercely competitive market.
