Subaru is one of the car brands known for its safety features, and the Japanese automaker intends to safeguard that reputation as it continues to find ways to further enhance the safety technology integrated into its vehicles.

Subaru has teamed up with Germany’s Infineon Technologies (Infineon) to develop its next-generation EyeSight technology, which is Subaru’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Subaru and Infineon will work together to design a microcontroller unit (MCU) to be integrated into future Subaru electronic control units.

The new electronic control unit (ECU), which will serve as the nucleus of the next-gen Subaru EyeSight, is said to enhance real-time capability that results in faster, more reliable processing of vehicle and sensor information. Subaru shared that this is made possible through the integration of Infineon’s latest AURIX TC4x automotive MCU.

“As advanced driver assistance systems become more sophisticated, reliable real-time operation across the entire system is key. With our market-leading microcontroller family AURIX, we support Subaru in building the foundation needed to deliver dependable decision-making and control across the vehicle,” said Infineon Executive Vice President and Automotive Chief Sales Officer Peter Schaefer.

Infineon explains that its AURIX TC4x will serve as the main controller for Subaru’s next-gen EyeSight tech. It enables sensor data fusion as well as decision-making and control by utilizing inputs from camera, radar, and other sensors. Infineon claims that with its AURIX TC4x, Subaru’s next-gen EyeSight will deliver faster and more reliable driver assistance functions.

Aside from enhancing its EyeSight tech, Subaru added that Infineon’s AURIX TC4x will also allow its future vehicles to have better vehicle dynamics control, as well as enhance overall performance, including its all-wheel drive powertrain. As such, Subaru believes that this will make its vehicles safer and better, resulting in “greater customer confidence and peace of mind.”

“Infineon’s AURIX MCU is a core technology that will support robust sensor data fusion and real‑time control within this integrated ECU, and is a key element enabling the evolution of next‑generation ADAS and vehicle motion control,” Subaru Executive Officer and Chief Digital Car Officer Eiji Shibata shared.

Autocar’s Take

Subaru’s EyeSight technology is one of the features that made the car brand popular, including in the Philippine market. EyeSight tech is an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which allows Subaru vehicles to sort of have an extra pair of eyes when driving, which adds to overall safety. The current version of its EyeSight tech is integrated into the Subaru Forester e-Boxer Hybrid, a vehicle that is locally available.

Integrating cars with ADAS is also seen in other vehicle manufacturers, and it has been gradually becoming part of the standard safety features among car brands. Among the list of car brands that integrate ADAS as a standard feature is Honda through its Honda Sensing tech. The said ADAS tech is equipped as standard in the Honda City Sedan and Hatchback.
