Mazda has taken the spotlight at the ongoing 2025 Japan Mobility Show (JMS) with the world premiere of two new concept models – the Vision X-Coupe and Vision X-Compact. Both models embody Mazda’s theme for the event, “The Joy of Driving Fuels a Sustainable Tomorrow,” a slogan hinting at its mission to revolutionize the brand and the evolution of the automobile by the year 2035.

Vision X-Coupe

Headlining Mazda’s JMS booth this year is the Vision X-Coupe. The display reimagines Mazda’s “Kodo – Soul of Motion” design language in a sleeker, more athletic form. Designed as a futuristic sports coupe, it carries a plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) powertrain. What’s special about this is that the Vision X-Coupe comes with a turbocharged two-rotor rotary engine, paired to an electric motor and a high-capacity battery. For fans of Mazda’s rotary-engined models like the iconic RX-7 and RX-8, this is good news. Together, the hybrid powertrain delivers around 510 hp, an all-electric driving range of about 160 km, and a combined driving range of around 800 km.

Mazda has also integrated advanced carbon neutral technologies into the concept. The Mazda Vision X-Coupe uses biofuel derived from microalgae, and features the brand’s Mobile Carbon Capture system, which absorbs a portion of carbon dioxide (CO2) as the car is driven. The tech is currently in the development phase, but is pegged to illustrate Mazda’s commitment to sustainable performance.

Vision X-Compact

Meanwhile, the Mazda Vision X-Compact takes on a more human-centric approach. It features Mazda’s concept of “empathic mobility,” blending digital innovation with emotional connection. The vehicle features a “human sensory digital model” technology and an AI companion capable of making natural conversations and route suggestions, designed to enhance the bond between man and machine.

Mazda says the Vision X-Compact represents how future vehicles can adapt to a driver’s emotions, routines, and preferences, creating a more personal and engaging driving experience.

“The phrase, ‘The joy of driving fuels a sustainable tomorrow,’ expresses not only Mazda’s fundamental spirit, but also the core of its future challenges. Under the shared global mission of achieving carbon neutrality, Mazda believes that the joy of driving can be a force for positive change for society and the planet. We remain committed to fulfilling the desire of those who love cars and wish to continue driving as long as possible,” shared Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s President and CEO.

The debut of the Vision X-Coupe and Vision X-Compact signals Mazda’s next chapter. As such, the brand envisions the future of the automobile as a vital part of the society that balances driving emotion, environmental responsibility, and intelligent technology.
