All-New Toyota RAV4 PHEV makes global debut

Toyota Motor Corporation today introduced the sixth-generation RAV4, marking the global debut of the model in Japan ahead of its domestic launch by the end of fiscal year 2025.

Originally introduced in 1994, the RAV4 helped establish the crossover SUV category, combining on-road comfort with off-road capabilities. Over five generations, the model has adapted to meet evolving customer lifestyles, achieving widespread popularity worldwide.

The new RAV4 builds on the robust character of its predecessor while introducing advanced performance and connectivity features. Developed under the theme “Life is an Adventure,” the vehicle features Toyota’s latest hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies. Notably, the RAV4 becomes the first Toyota model to adopt the Arene software platform, enabling smarter safety systems, enhanced connectivity, and software-defined vehicle (SDV) capabilities.

Electrified Powertrains

The RAV4 is available in both Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) variants. The PHEV model introduces a newly developed high-output plug-in system compatible with Toyota’s sixth-generation hybrid architecture. It offers a targeted EV cruising range of 150 km*, a significant improvement over the previous generation.

Additional PHEV features include:

  • Enhanced motor output and off-road performance
  • Vehicle-to-home (V2H) power supply capability
  • DC fast charging reaching 80% battery capacity in approximately 30 minutes*

The HEV variant benefits from upgrades to its transaxle, battery, and power control unit, resulting in smoother, more responsive performance.

Digital and Safety Enhancements

The integration of the Arene platform enables over-the-air updates and intelligent features, including a new-generation multimedia system and the latest Toyota Safety Sense package. Advanced safety upgrades include:

  • Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) with roadside guidance
  • Standardized Sudden Acceleration Suppression system
