It seems that Toyota is not just looking to introduce the updated Land Cruiser FJ early next year, as the rumor mill suggests that the Japanese automaker could also debut the GR Prius. The upcoming Toyota GR Prius could serve as a special final edition to boost interest in the car brand’s hybrid line, as reported by Japan’s Best Car via Creative Trend.

The GR Prius is said to be based on, or take heavy inspiration from, the Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition concept that debuted in June 2023. The concept car is showcased to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and it was not initially announced or planned for production. But if the reports are true, it could mean that the Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition concept served as a preview of the upcoming GR Prius.

Now, before anything else, take note that this is an unconfirmed report as of this writing, and Toyota has yet to release an official statement regarding the GR Prius. Nevertheless, the report stated that the production-spec GR Prius could feature the same aggressive styling elements integrated into the concept car.

Speaking of which, the report suggests that the GR Prius could be equipped with an aerodynamic body package including side skirts, canards, and a rear diffuser. It is also said to have a large rear wing, a lightweight carbon fiber hood, and multi-headlamps that are designed to improve visibility. Other design details include a wider track suspension setup with overfenders, which gives the GR Prius a lower and wider stance than the standard model.

When it comes to powertrain, the report states that the GR Prius could be fitted with a performance-oriented hybrid setup. Unlike other GR models such as the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and GR Supra, which use gasoline engines, the upcoming GR Prius is said to be powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder hybrid engine. The report goes on by stating that the GR Prius could be integrated with Toyota’s E-Four electric four-wheel drive system to maximize the car’s traction.

As mentioned earlier, Toyota has not officially confirmed whether or not it will be introducing the GR Prius. If the reports are accurate, we could expect the Toyota GR Prius to debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon, which kicks off on January 15, 2027.

It looks like Toyota has a lot in store when it comes to its future products. Though not yet confirmed, the rumors circulating online suggest that Toyota is gearing up to launch new models, an indication that it wants to maintain its relevance in the market. Launching a GR Prius with a hybrid powertrain would allow Toyota to give the Prius a sort of breath of fresh air. Placing a GR package on its pioneer hybrid vehicle could spark a new market appeal for the Prius. But, as mentioned, Toyota has yet to release an official announcement about the GR Prius as of this writing.
