The global shift toward electrification is gaining momentum, and Nissan seems ready to stake its claim. Enter the Nissan NX8, a mid-to-large electric SUV launched in China that could hint at the Japanese carmaker’s next moves for other markets. While the future for this new model looks bright globally, will the local market be the right fit for it, given Nissan Philippines’ recent confirmation of the arrival of the N7 battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)?
Built on Dongfeng Nissan’s new “Tianyan” architecture, the NX8 flaunts a tech-forward vibe. It offers both range-extended (REEV) and fully electric (BEV) powertrains, setting it apart from most SUVs available in the local market today. The EREV variant combines a 1.5-liter turbo engine with a 265 hp electric motor, while the BEV version delivers up to 340 hp and has claimed driving ranges of 565 km and 630 km, depending on battery size. Charging the seed is supported by an 800V high-voltage system and fast-charging technology.
The NX8 also impresses visually and technologically. It heads the way with an updated version of Nissan’s V-Motion grille, complemented by a 2.4-meter front light bar, split headlights, and an illuminated badge. The rear end, meanwhile, features a full-width OLED light curtain with 2,064 LEDs, supporting customizable light patterns. Inside, dual floating screens, a two-tone steering wheel, ambient lighting, wireless charging, and a head-up display create a cockpit that feels truly modern. The NX8 also uses LiDAR technology, which it applies to such features as navigation and intelligent parking.

Size-wise, the NX8 measures 4,870 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,680 mm tall, with a 2,917 mm wheelbase – figures that can be compared to the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid, which, by the way, is sold locally by Hyundai Motor Philippines. The Korean SUV measures around 4,980 mm long, 1,975 mm wide, and 1,750 mm tall, meaning the Nissan NX8 offers nearly the same interior space and road presence while flaunting a sleeker and more tech-laden electrified alternative.
In terms of electrification, the Palisade Hybrid comes close to the NX8 REEV, as it is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor that delivers 334 hp. The NX8’s advantage, though, is its BEV version, which does not require refueling, given the rising costs of gasoline these days.
Should Nissan Philippines bring it here? There’s a strong argument. In the Philippines, SUVs remain a dominant choice for many car buyers, and interest in EVs is growing. The NX8 blends both trends in one package. While EV infrastructure and pricing may pose challenges, its size, tech, and styling make it a solid contender. With the N7 BEV and Frontier Pro PHEV already confirmed for the local market, the NX8 represents an intriguing “what if” scenario where a vehicle could redefine Nissan’s presence in the Philippines.
Autocar’s Take
The Nissan NX8 resembles a bold move in SUV design and electrification. Its clean, modern interior, with an interface that is almost devoid of physical buttons, signifies a shift toward fully digital control, giving the cabin a minimalist, tech-forward feel. Combined with both REEV and BEV powertrains, the NX8 could reshape what Filipino buyers expect in terms of technology, space, and efficiency.
With a character comparable to the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid, it also offers a familiar SUV presence and electrified performance, albeit with more tech wrapped in a sleeker body. If Nissan Philippines were to bring the NX8 in, it would be a compelling choice for forward-looking families and tech-savvy drivers.
