The design philosophy behind the VinFast VF7

The VinFast VF 7, a product of Torino Design’s “cosmic inspiration” aesthetic, is more than a vehicle; it’s a statement of its owner’s free-spirited individuality, blending art, technology, and practicality.

VinFast Philippines CEO Mr. Cao Ngoc Nguyen Duy (sixth from left) with special guests at the launch of the VF 7 at the 12th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit last October 24, 2024.

For some, a car is simply a means of transportation. For others, it’s an extension of who they are — an emotional connection that reflects their identity, style, and lifestyle. A recent survey conducted by OnePoll1 highlights this deep bond: nearly 51% of participants in the car-centric U.S. consider their vehicle part of their family, 22% report a strong emotional attachment to their car, and 24% say their car holds cherished memories.

Understanding the role of emotional attachment, VinFast’s VF 7 has redefined what it means to own a car. Designed by the renowned Torino Design studio, the VF 7 is a declaration of freedom and individuality. With a design language inspired by the cosmos and aerospace, it fulfills both aesthetic and functional desires for those with an unbounded lifestyle.

“(The) VF 7 was born to keep the soul of a concept car alive in a commercial vehicle,” shared Paolo Smeriglio, the head of project management at Torino Design.

Exterior: A Bold Expression of Cosmic Inspiration

The VF 7’s exterior tells a story of speed, agility, and innovation. Drawing inspiration from space exploration, the car embodies aerodynamic precision with a design philosophy described by Torino Design as the “Asymmetric Universe.” Every line and contour speaks of movement and freedom, while maintaining a modern elegance. The head-turning front fascia features a streamlined hood reminiscent of a spacecraft, with VinFast’s signature “V” light bar symbolizing wings in flight.

“In terms of aesthetics, our challenge was to design something that remains timelessly beautiful while still being bold and distinctly futuristic,” said Smeriglio.

He explained how the front corners of the VF 7 are rounded for smooth airflow, the low-profile hood seamlessly transitions into the windshield to reduce air pressure, while the roofline slopes gently towards the rear, integrating a sleek, elongated spoiler that channels airflow to create turbulence-reducing vortexes above and behind the car. Hidden door handles and a concealed rear wiper further enhance aerodynamics, adding to the VF 7’s elegant and refined look.

On the side, sharp, triangular embossments evoke the sleek geometry of supersonic jets. More than just being decorative, these shapes enhance the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency while reinforcing its dynamic stance. The rear boasts bold, sculpted lines that resemble an aircraft tailfin, creating a sense of propulsion even when the car is stationary.

Interior: A Driver-Centric Universe

Step inside the VF 7, and you’ll be transported into an immersive world designed for the modern driver. The “Asymmetric Universe” theme continues, with every element deliberately oriented toward the driver. A sporty D-cut steering wheel, intuitive button shifters, and a 12.9-inch display cater to both form and function, creating an interior that feels futuristic and exhilarating.

Passengers, too, are treated to an experience that marries simplicity with luxury. The spacious cabin offers comfort without compromising style. Premium materials, elegant lighting, and clever use of space provide a sense of openness and refinement. In addition, innovative tech features such as advanced driver-assistance systems (in the VF 7 Plus variant) and immersive entertainment options make every ride a delight.

Beyond its striking design, the VF 7 delivers exceptional performance that aligns with its bold appearance. The Plus variant boasts dual electric motors, generating a combined 348.6 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The battery pack has a capacity of 75.3 kWh, providing a maximum driving range of approximately 496 km on a full charge (based on NEDC standards). With a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of just 5.8 seconds, it stands shoulder to shoulder with luxury performance SUVs. Yet, it remains uniquely its own, crafted to make sustainability exciting and accessible.

The Base version, with its single-motor configuration, offers an impressive 430 km of range on a full charge (based on NEDC standards). Both models come with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including hill-start assist, traction control, and adaptive cruise control.

A Vision Realized

The VinFast VF 7’s design journey was no small feat, requiring over 80,000 hours of painstaking effort from Torino Design. This dedication is evident in every aspect of the vehicle. From the sleek aerodynamics of the exterior to the comfort-driven interior, the VF 7 embodies a harmonious blend of art, technology, and practicality.

“The VF 7 is one of the boldest and most innovative models in VinFast’s extensive electric vehicle lineup,” shared Mr. Cao Ngoc Nguyen Duy, CEO of VinFast Philippines.

Ultimately, the VF 7 represents a lifestyle choice for those who refuse to compromise. Its cosmic inspiration, bold individuality, and innovative features make it an irresistible option for anyone seeking to elevate their driving experience.
