The Philippine electric vehicle (EV) market is set to expand as the Tesla Model Y L makes its first ever local appearance in a preview event held at the brand’s Experience Center in BGC. Literally an extended version of the already-successful Model Y, the new variant introduces a longer wheelbase and a significantly reworked interior tailored for increased passenger capacity and everyday usability.

At its core is a three-row, six-seat configuration, replacing the standard model’s five-seat layout with a more versatile cabin. The second row features two captain’s chairs with power features and one-touch folding, giving more room to access the third row. Rear passengers benefit from additional two seats with power recline, one-touch folding, and both ventilation and heating, making the rear-most cabin more comfortable for regular occupants, adults or children alike. Up front, both the driver and passenger enjoy power-adjustable seats with thigh support and adjustable headrests, as well as automatic climate control.

The Model Y L also brings a stronger focus on in-cabin technology. It is equipped with an 18+1 speaker audio system, complete with a center speaker and additional microphones, delivering what Tesla describes as an “Immersive Sound X” experience that extends to the second and third rows.

Practicality sees a boost, as well. With the seats folded flat, cargo capacity increases to 2,539 liters, supported by upgraded storage solutions throughout the cabin. Exterior and aerodynamic enhancements include an extended roofline, a new rear spoiler for increased downforce, and an integrated brake light, all contributing to improved efficiency.

Performance-wise, the Model Y L uses a dual-motor all-wheel drive system, offering up to 681 km of range. This setup allows the vehicle to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in about 5 seconds and a top speed of 201 km/h. This is balanced by an electronically controlled adaptive suspension system for optimum ride comfort.

According to Tesla Philippines, the new Model Y L introduces new finishes, including a Cosmic Silver exterior and a Zen Grey interior, reinforcing its more premium positioning. It also did not mention any specific official launch date, as of this writing. However, it did say that the estimated pricing has been set at P2,849,000, for now. This figure may adjust as the launch date nears. The brand estimates that deliveries of the new Model Y L will begin in Q2 of this year.

Autocar’s Take

The arrival of the Tesla Model Y L signals a shift in how EVs are being positioned for the Philippine market. Instead of focusing on just performance and efficiency, this longer version of the Model Y leans toward practicality, something many local buyers consistently prioritize. A three-row layout and generous cargo capacity make it an easier option for many EV buyers looking for their first or main family car.

Pricing remains on the premium side, but the added flexibility helps justify the step up. If Tesla follows through with a marketably successful launch and a more attractive final price point, the Model Y L could broaden EV adoption towards more mainstream households.
