JAMA Lube Oil Seminar 2025 highlights innovations in engine lubrication for Filipino motorists

Mr. Jonathan F. Del Rosario, VP for Operations and Corporate Technical
Services Group of Petron Corporation, welcomes the delegates to the JAMA
Lube Oil Seminar 2025.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), in collaboration with Petron Corporation, hosted the JAMA Lube Oil Seminar 2025 on March 5 at the Makati Diamond Residences. Bringing together global automotive and lubricant experts, the seminar provided insights into the latest advancements in engine oil technology and their impact on vehicle efficiency, emissions, and sustainability in the Philippines.

Advancing Fuel Efficiency Through Engine Oils

One of the key discussions centered on the role of ultra-low viscosity engine oils, such as 0W-8, 0W-16, and 0W-20, in enhancing fuel economy. Experts highlighted that these oils can improve efficiency by up to 3%, which translates to significant fuel savings over time. JAMA data further revealed that widespread adoption of these lubricants could contribute to an annual reduction of 373,000 tons of CO₂ emissions in Japan, with similar benefits possible in the Philippines. Innovations in additive technology have also improved the thermal and oxidation stability of these oils, ensuring longer engine life and superior performance.

Environmentally Conscious Lubrication Solutions

Beyond fuel savings, modern low-friction lubricants play a crucial role in reducing vehicle emissions. Research shows that transitioning to ultra-low viscosity oils in Indonesia could result in a reduction of 258,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually for in-use vehicles and 11,700 tons for newly manufactured models. A similar shift in the Philippines, particularly in highly congested urban areas, could significantly improve air quality. Additionally, new lubricant formulations are being developed to align with stricter Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions regulations, reinforcing the role of high-quality lubricants in achieving carbon neutrality.

Enhancing Motorcycle Performance with JASO T 903:2023 Standards

With motorcycles comprising a significant portion of vehicles on Philippine roads, the seminar also introduced the latest developments in motorcycle engine oils under the JASO T 903:2023 standard. These new formulations offer improved fuel economy, prevent clutch slippage, and enhance durability—key benefits for riders navigating congested city streets. Key takeaways include:

  • Clutch Compatibility: Improved engagement and reduced slippage with JASO MA/MB classifications.
  • Emission Compliance: Formulated to meet evolving environmental regulations.
  • Extended Performance: Increased oxidation resistance and shear stability for longer service life.

Motorcyclists are encouraged to use JASO-approved lubricants to maintain optimal performance and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Specialized Lubricants for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

As the Philippine automotive industry moves toward electrification, the demand for specialized lubricants is increasing. The seminar emphasized the importance of tailored lubricants for hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), which serve critical functions such as cooling, transmission efficiency, and electric motor performance. Industry experts outlined key considerations:

  • Hybrid Engine Oils: Designed for variable temperature cycles to prevent oil degradation.
  • EV Transmission & Cooling Fluids: Engineered to withstand high operating temperatures while minimizing energy loss.
  • Thermal Management: Advanced cooling fluid technologies that enhance efficiency and prolong battery life.

As hybrid and EV adoption grows, proper lubrication will be essential to maximizing drivetrain longevity and energy efficiency.

Making Informed Lubrication Choices

To help Filipino motorists choose the right engine oil, the seminar offered practical guidelines:

  • Fuel Efficiency: Use low-viscosity oils like 0W-16, 0W-20, and 5W-30.
  • Motorcycle Longevity: Select JASO-approved lubricants to prevent clutch slippage.
  • Hybrid & EV Optimization: Opt for lubricants tailored for electrified powertrains.
  • Engine Protection: Ensure API, ILSAC, and JASO certifications for long-term reliability.
  • Heavy Machinery: Choose hydraulic fluids with a high viscosity index for industrial applications.

Investing in High-Quality Engine Oil

The JAMA Lube Oil Seminar 2025 reinforced the importance of using premium-quality lubricants as an investment in both vehicle performance and environmental sustainability. High-quality oils deliver:

  • Improved fuel efficiency and long-term cost savings.
  • Superior engine protection and extended lifespan.
  • Reduced emissions for a cleaner environment.
  • Compliance with evolving emission regulations.
  • Enhanced safety and operational efficiency in industrial applications.

As the country’s leading oil company, Petron Corporation continues to provide world-class lubricants that meet global industry standards. Products such as Petron Blaze Racing, Rev-X, and Sprint are engineered to deliver optimal fuel economy, engine protection, and reduced emissions—ensuring a better driving experience for Filipino motorists.
