The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or more casually called the G-Wagon, has been around since 1979. A symbol of the German brand’s signature blend of adventure and luxury, the G-Wagon has entered a new phase. Meet the Mercedes-Benz G-Class G580 with EQ Technology, the first-ever all-electric G-Wagon.

The new model combines the well-known rugged character of the G-Class with an advanced all-electric drivetrain. And the good news is that it’s now officially in the Philippine market, thanks to Inchcape Philippines, Mercedes-Benz’s official local distributor.

Powering the G580 is Mercedes-Benz’s EQ or “Electric Intelligence” Technology, which the brand says is its “new and exciting e-mobility experience” offering. With this in mind, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology moves with a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which is rated at 116 Kw/h.

This battery pack enables the G580 to register an EV driving range of 473 km on a single full charge. Ideally, with this range, one could set out on a road trip in Central Luzon, particularly in Baler, Aurora, as the location is approximately just 230 km away from Manila. Along the way, several EV charging stations can be found to top up the power, if desired.

The Petron Power Up station at the northbound NLEX Km 23 along Marilao in Bulacan is a popular choice, offering 24-hour fast EV charging services with its 60 kW fast chargers. Alternatively, one can use an EV charging station locator mobile app for an even more convenient way of keeping the power up for good measure.

Aside from the EV technology, the G580 also features torque vectoring as part of its all-wheel-drive system. This feature distributes a measured amount of torque to all four wheels as needed for optimum grip and stability, especially on rough or uneven roads.

Moreover, the G580 also has two new features called G-Steering and G-Turn. The former works by adjusting the speed of the inside wheels while taking a turn, reducing the vehicle’s turning radius for improved cornering agility and handling. The latter, meanwhile, allows the vehicle to perform a 720-degree spin on its axis for realigning the G580 towards the right direction when roads are slippery. Just make sure the space is clear of any obstacles when using the G-Turn, or don’t even think about showing off this nifty little party trick.

Because it’s now an EV, the familiar engine rumble of the G-Wagon is gone. To make its presence known, the G 580 comes with a G-Roar system that emits an engine-like sound, both inside and out of the vehicle. This is complemented by the AVAS or Acoustic Vehicle Alert System, so pedestrians will be able to hear it coming.

The interior of the G580 features the latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, characterized by a sizable LED screen that incorporates both the driver information display and the infotainment. This system comes with voice command, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, and premium audio, among others. Completing the experience is a cabin made of premium materials that retains the luxurious persona of the G-Class.

According to Mercedes-Benz Philippines, the G580 with EQ Technology comes equipped with an AMG Line package. This includes the standard chrome grille, which can be optioned in black, distinct brake calipers, chrome exterior accents, 20-inch AMG alloy wheels, and AMG floor mats.

Mercedes-Benz Philippines celebrates the entry of the G580 with EQ Technology by offering a special introductory price of P13,590,000.
