E-bike officially banned on major roads

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has started the implementation of the e-bike and e-trike ban on select major roads in Metro Manila. This is after postponing the initial e-bike ban that was supposedly to commence back in December 2025.   

The LTO said that the ban on e-bikes and e-trikes on major roads intends to address not only traffic flow inefficiencies but also enhance the overall road safety for all commuters and motorists. The agency added that highways are “designated for higher-speed vehicular movement, and alternative transport units like e-trikes require dedicated lanes or appropriate routes to operate safely.”

As such, the e-bike and e-trike ban is meant to have safer roads for all motorists. Among the major roads that prohibit e-bikes and e-trikes are the following: Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), C-5 Road, Roxas Boulevard, and Quirino Avenue to Magallanes – South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). The ban of e-bikes and e-trikes on the said major roads is in adherence to the current regulations imposed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), as per the LTO.

LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao expressed that the agency’s priority is to balance mobility needs with safety and order, which is why it has decided to commence the implementation of the e-bike and e-trike ban on select major roads in Metro Manila.   

“We recognize that e-trikes play a role in our public transport ecosystem, which is why the ban is limited to specific high-volume roads. Our priority is to balance mobility needs with safety and order – we are working to identify and develop suitable routes where e-trikes can operate without disrupting traffic or endangering road users. We urge all operators to familiarize themselves with the ban of e-trikes on major highways,” Lacanilao said.  

Those who are caught operating e-bikes or e-trikes on prohibited roads will face the appropriate penalties under Republic Act No. 4136, also known as the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, and Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01. This includes paying fines and the possible impounding of the e-bike or e-trike.
