BYD has released a new over-the-air (OTA) software update for the Seagull in China, giving the nifty little hatchback a host of neat new features – from UI themes to updated climate control.
The update starts with new UI options for the infotainment system. Now, you can choose from playful themes like a relaxing swimming pool or a cute sleeping puppy, far more fun than the standard light-and-dark themes found in Philippine models.
Next, another part of the update includes microphone-free karaoke for select apps in China, such as Kugou Music, Kuwo Music, and QQ Music. Unlike the local spec Seagull, which requires a separate microphone for in-car karaoke.
As for navigation, the electrified compact now lets you edit the map, adding more waypoints for easier, more convenient navigation. Another navigation benefit is the ability to connect phone navigation apps, such as Baidu Maps, for a more streamlined and convenient user experience, something yet to be seen in Philippine models or software such as Google Maps, Waze, and the like.

Aside from the aforementioned navigation benefits, voice queries are also added. For use cases such as requesting information about the upcoming destination, other locations in the area, and ratings for those locations.
A 360-degree camera for blind-spot detection and five-angle recording for security, similar to the feature found in Tesla models, is another benefit of the update. And lastly, the new features introduced to the Seagull include window ventilation control via the infotainment system.
Aside from adding multiple new features for the Seagull, BYD has also refined multiple features for streamlined use. Such as adding voice assistance for foreign languages, Bluetooth key unlocking, a simplified map settings layout, improved voice recognition prompts, voice navigation broadcasts, real-time nighttime video recording, improved parking assistance, tweaked UI display and text prompts, improved radar sensing, and, lastly, improved steering feel.
Instructions for installing the OTA require the car to be parked with the battery at least 20% and to have a good signal for the update, during which the vehicle will be inoperable.

Thanks to this update, the Seagull now offers a nifty set of features to enhance the driving experience compared to its Philippine-market counterpart. Considering that Seagulls in the Philippines also receive OTA Updates, does this mean we might see the same thing happen for units in the Philippines? Let’s wait and see.
