The Automotive Body Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (ABMAP) fully supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to newly appointed Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon to enhance the daily commuting experience for Filipinos. ABMAP believes that the most effective way to achieve this is through the full and proper implementation of the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP), which prioritizes commuter convenience, safety, and efficiency.
“We stand behind President Marcos’ call and Secretary Dizon’s leadership in improving public transportation,” said ABMAP Executive Director Edgar Manuel. “Modernizing our transport system is essential. By shifting to safer, more reliable, and environmentally friendly vehicles, we can provide a commuting experience that older transport modes simply cannot match.”
The PTMP focuses on replacing outdated public utility vehicles (PUVs) with modern, Euro 4-compliant units equipped with air-conditioning, GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, and cashless payment systems. These features improve safety, comfort, and overall efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
“Commuters have already demonstrated their preference for modern jeepneys, often choosing to wait for them instead of boarding traditional units. This proves that the public values comfort and reliability,” Manuel added.
ABMAP also highlights the program’s benefits for transport operators and drivers, including lower fuel costs, better-maintained vehicles, and more organized fleet operations, leading to improved efficiency and profitability.
“We recognize the concerns surrounding the transition, but modernization is about improving—not eliminating—traditional jeepneys,” Manuel clarified. “A forward-thinking transport system should address the needs of commuters while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for drivers and operators.”
As a key advocate for the growth of the local automotive body manufacturing industry, ABMAP is committed to collaborating with the DOTr and stakeholders to ensure a smooth and equitable transition under the PTMP.
“We call on all stakeholders to support this initiative. Our shared objective is a public transport system that truly serves the people,” Manuel concluded.
With strong government backing and the leadership of Secretary Vince Dizon, ABMAP remains confident that the modernization of the transport sector will push forward, ultimately improving the daily lives of millions of Filipino commuters.
