Lexus unveils all-new Lexus LBX hybrid crossover on global stage

Further expanding its crossover offering, Lexus officially held the world premier of the all-new Lexus LBX in Milan, Italy. Set as the smallest Lexus yet, the brand’s latest compact crossover offering is Lexus’ gateway to its electrified lineup.

Powered by a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) system, the all-new Lexus LBX is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that is mated to a single electric motor. This ICE and electric combo is rated to output 134 horsepower and 136 lb ft of torque delivered to its front wheels. Powering the electric motor is a bi-polar nickel-metal-hydride battery that was first used in the all-new Lexus RX.

The all-new Lexus LBX is built on the TNGA-B compact class platform shared with the Toyota Yaris Cross sold in markets overseas. The upcoming hybrid crossover was developed to carry the Lexus Driving Signature which aims to create an engaging yet comfortable driving experience.

Lexus utilized the “Premium Casual” design philosophy in coming up with the all-new LBX. The brand aimed to develop a compact crossover that appeals to people with sophisticated taste who are looking to incorporate luxury into everyday drives.

“The new LBX stands for ‘Lexus Breakthrough X(cross)-over’. It has been meticulously crafted to challenge the conventional notion of a luxury car. Our aim was to create a vehicle that enabled the discerning customer to enjoy a relaxing drive and be their true selves. We strove to create an exciting vehicle that would give the everlasting desire to stay behind the wheel the moment they sat in the driver’s seat – a deep sense of connection between driver and car that begins the moment the accelerator pedal is depressed,” said Lexus LBX Chief Engineer Kunihiko Endo.

The new Lexus hybrid crossover features the brand’s latest “Unified Spindle” front fascia design. It also features dynamic proportions which defy the standards of its class. It also features a rear design that accentuates a simple, planted stance with a low center of gravity.

Further incorporating luxury in the compact crossover segment, the Lexus LXB features a refined interior design that is often found in vehicles from higher classes. The Lexus Driving Signature will also be translated in the cockpit layout through Lexus’ Tanuza concept which positions controls and information sources immediately around the driver, requiring minimal movements of hand or eye to highlight driving enjoyment. It is also said that the LBX is the first Lexus to feature a 12.3-inch full LCD display meter.

As per the brand, the Lexus LBX will also be available in four “atmospheric” designs or variants in addition to the base model namely, Elegant and Relax which focus on a refined feel, and Emotion and Cool which have a sportier, more dynamic character. The LBX will also be available in a “Bespoke Build” program which allows customers to personalize their LBX by selecting interior colors, seat materials, interior patterns, and more. The made-to-order program is said to offer approximately 330,000 potential combinations.

The Lexus LBX will be officially launched in Europe, Japan, and select markets worldwide starting fourth quarter of 2023.
