Manila is rapidly gaining recognition as a global tech hub, landing in the 81-90 percentile of Startup Genome’s 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking. The Philippines is now home to over 1,100 startups, laying the foundation for a vibrant tech ecosystem. With this growth comes the need for transparency and adaptability when launching international businesses in the country—a key message emphasized by Afanassi Petrov, Business Development Manager SEA at inDrive, during his recent address to global startups looking to expand into the Philippines.

Petrov, who previously led inDrive’s expansion into Pakistan, highlighted the Philippines’ diverse and dynamic market, particularly the rising demand for improved transportation options. inDrive’s entry into the country was informed by in-depth market research that examined local passenger needs, the competitive landscape, infrastructure, regulatory environment, and cultural nuances.

Community-Driven Approach

Before fully launching its operations, inDrive engaged with local communities to gauge interest and ensure that its model aligned with Filipino needs. “We received a lot of interest from local communities, particularly from drivers,” Petrov noted. This positive reception reaffirmed inDrive’s decision to secure the necessary licenses and begin formal operations in the country.

Transparency has remained at the core of inDrive’s approach since its relaunch in the Philippines in June. The company partnered with transportation advocacy group Laban TNVS to address driver concerns and implement long-term solutions. Demonstrating its commitment, inDrive offered free services to partner drivers for the first two to six months of operations, with plans to introduce a competitive 10% service charge afterward—significantly lower than the industry average.

inDrive also partnered with Toyota Quezon Avenue and RideSecure Car Care Center to ensure safer roads for its drivers, offering perks such as free 21-point vehicle check-ups, special maintenance packages, and comprehensive insurance coverage.

Since its relaunch, inDrive has seen impressive growth, with rides increasing by 75%. The platform also reported an 86% increase in active users and a 96% rise in drivers.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

Petrov stressed the importance of staying up-to-date with industry trends and developments, especially for startups in the tech and ride-hailing sectors. Innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction, with discussions on their implementation intensifying in the Philippines.

inDrive is already leveraging AI within its pricing algorithms, optimizing fares based on real-time factors like driver availability, passenger demand, and weather conditions. The company is also exploring the potential for introducing EV fleets, following successful deployments in markets like India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Thailand.

“We’re closely watching the local car industry. If we see significant growth in EV adoption, we’ll onboard EV drivers and explore ways to support them,” Petrov explained.

Compliance as a Cornerstone

Petrov emphasized that compliance with local regulations is vital for building trust with stakeholders and ensuring long-term success. “Compliance is an essential part of your business in the country… It’s a way to build trust between you and other stakeholders. I strongly suggest starting by researching how regulations work in the country,” he advised.

In conclusion, Petrov underscored that transparency, compliance, and stakeholder relationships are key to succeeding in the Philippines’ evolving tech landscape. As demonstrated by inDrive, startups that prioritize these elements can not only navigate the challenges of expansion but thrive in the country’s dynamic ecosystem.
